ISLAND BRANCH RAILWAYS, Mr. Martin Shows the Injus- tice Dong This Province. Mr. Macdonald Supports Him—Davies and Perry Have Their Say. Orrawa, Juae 12.—Prince Edward Island branch lilies were discuseed in the House yesterday. Mr. Martin placed before the Committee the injustice done bis province in the matter of railway ap- propriation. He showed that while tubsidies had been paid for construction in other provinces Prince Edward Island had oaly the same railway that it had at the time of confederation. Commuuica- tion with the mainland was about in the same state it was twent>-five years agce Mr. Martin understood that it was propos- ed to submit to arbitration whether any- thing more ought to be done for this province. He protested against arbitrauion to decide whether branch railways ought to be built. The -late governmeut had adm.tted that thes: roais ought te be built acd bad made provision for them. The Minister of Marine had endorsed that programme and conld not properly re- Open it now, But he was surpri-ed to see that the estimates contained enly $7,500 for the Island, while willions were asked for the Crow’s Nest, and a:ill more millions to provide a third line between Montreal and Quebec. Hon. Mr. Davies, replying » Mr. Martir, said that Premier Peters had propo-éu arbitration oh questions relatiog to tbe terms of union. The Government would consider the matter afier ihe session. Mr. Perry was understood to express satisfaction witb the position of the Gov- ernment which he said had done more fir P. E. Island than the late Government did in eighteen years. Mr. Martio—*What have they done?” Mr. Perry (after a pause)—“They have done a great tervice; they are going te repeal the franchise.” Mr. Martin did not succeed the information. Mr. McDonaid referred to certain prom- ises of Hon. Mr. Davies o. which he saw no sign of fuifillment. He affirmed that the Liberal-Conservatives were committed to the co..ruction of certain branches which would be in the interest of Canada as wel! as in the inter- ests of the localities affected. This represents a cleavage of sentiment among the powers as Germany is entirely willing that Turkey should keep the conquered province. Should Turkey decide to defy Great Britain, relying on the support of the Drie Kaiserbund, the eastern question will again assume an acute phase. The Turkish Prime Minie- ter is reported te have grown dumb with astonishment when England’s ultimatum was delivered.
