U .P.E.I. SUN FEB 17,1983. Well it's time once again for "Movie Review!" and this week .in our never ending search for the weird and the unusual we crucify "The Mission— ary" now currently play- ing up at the Charlotte— town Mall. Crucify? Yeah, that's right, crucify, but in’a sense that the packaging for this movie is decept— ive and leads you to be— - lieve that it's total comedy. I mean let's look at the facts for a moment, EXHIBIT A: Michael Palur of Monty Python is the star, the association with Monty Python is en— ough to make you believe it's a comedy. EXHIBIT B: The film was made by Hand Made Films, producers of such other fine works as, The Life of Brian, Time Ban":its, v and Monty Python's In ‘ Search For Holy Grail. EXHIBIT C: rShe adver- tising in the paper presents a priest look— ing to Heaven with lip— stick on his collar afa— ong with the line, "He gave his body to save their souls." I mean what does that mean to 3 you? ' EXHIBIT D: The adver- ".iSing on television, all he clins shown depict the funnier ik'flGS throughout the sovie. Believe me, in “m moxie these mes 1w and 11‘ "Z“.x’€‘u‘?37. ‘ «17mg: 3:5 i“‘..11ki:"’ but not to the degree which one thinks of when thev hear the name Min- hael Palin. Aside from all this, the movie réally follows the trials and tribulat— ions of the missionary ~ C.W. Fortescue (play.- ed Michael Palin) when he returns to England after a ten year posting in Africa. His assignment upon returning hone in- vol’ves doing; missionary work in the slums of Lon— don paying particular em- phasis to saving the soul of London's "fallen women" How he goes about this is rather an unorthodox met— ‘ hod which I leave to your imaginations Interlacing the movie are various other themes concerning his relations with an upperclass lady (played by Maggie Smith) who finds his new mission along with his long standing fiance who has waited ten years for him to return, from Africa; I don't think there's much more to say after that, it's simply not what we expected and after hav— ing talked with other peo— \ ple who have seen it, they seen to agree. If I was put on a spot to pick out a hi—light of the film I'd probably have to say the Butler for Maggie. Smith.
