It is false, and thoroughly false, in its} allegations against the under Sheriff — it is false in asserting: | that any one Of the Jury “ are’ what is “ termed Rowdies”— | it ie false in asserting that any one of them is of *‘ a low stand- ard of morals.’’ We do not know of any man, out of the whole panel, who has ever yet been arraigned for any violation of she laws of his country ;—but is Duncan Madean the man, | who liveth not in & glass house, and who may with impunity libel his fellow eglonists about th ir want of morality? Ife is, indeed, “*a Daniel come to We are sure the hum- blest man on the special panel would be sorry to make Duncan Macloan’s character as the standard of morals for his own. The objections to the jury made by Dancan Maclean, may be summed up as follows :—1. That a majority of them had political opinions in opposition to hisown. 2. That some of | them hold Government offices, and represented at one time or 3. That rted upon in the public another members of the Government at elections. those and others had been ** animad) press by the exid Deponent."’ Really, these are very sub- siautial reasons for setting aside a jury. With regard to the first, we shovid lite to know where any twelve men can be found in this country who have noé their political opinions on the one side or the other? If the existence of political opinions on one side or the other wae to he considered as a text for dis- | qualifying a man to serve upon a jury, then we should nayer have a jury to try any cause. As to the second ground ef romplaint, that some of the especial panel hold Government dices, sach as Road Commissioner, Collector of Excise, &c., not. to be presumed that the possession of any such office | must necessarily entail the crime of perjury, although the slander is broadly insinuated hy Maclean. Of course Maclean thinks they would, and it | i$ only sach persons he would be satisfied to see upen the jury. Batthe third objection to the jury is the most shallow and | eaprineipled of any offered by Juclean—some of them being, | ‘upon whew he hath commented in the | as bays, | rsuns pablig press.’ Here, then, it is broadly aseefted, that when | at anprineipled writer chooses to scatter his ribald slane and indulsze his slanderous propensitics against unoficnding persons | ia the community, those unofiending persons must be debarred | ~that he} soon subscribed, among themselves, the required sam, upon | c. or tbat ho has represented a momber | the somewhat singular condition that the clergyman selected | Re. | should not be a Canadian; and it wag afterwards agreed thet ithe money should be handed to the Colonial Sceretary, to- lant . > , ‘ . election by any body of clergy or laity. Picrov, July 3. Man Snor.—A mutinous affray took place last Tuesday evening on board the brig Oregon, Capt. Green, lying in the stream ready for sea. Jtappears that the mate and crew, who were all more or less under the influence of liquor, quarrelled with the captain, under some pretext, the particulars of which we have not heard, when he retired to his cabin for protection. They attempted to follow him, and even went so far as to smash in the door and windows, when the captain in self-def fence found it necessary to resort to fire arms, and seizing a pistol, shot the foremost one of the vane, the contents entering the : > | stomach. This had the effect of sobering the crew who} ‘ | attempted no further violence, An inyestigation was had | before the magistrates yesterday. We shall endeavor to give particulars next week.
