This forenoon, Mr. <T. W. Hodvon, Live Stock Commissioner, Mr. KE. B. Elderkin,of Amberst, president ot the Stock Breeders’ Association, Mr. R. R. Robert- son, superintendent of the Experimental Farm at Nappan, Nova Scotia, and Mr. W. W. Hubbard, of the Co-Operative Farmer, Sussex, N. B., waited upoa the Provircisl Government and the Board of Trade with regard to tie of the transporation df live siock and the promotion of an industry ot importance to our people. The meeting was beld in the Premier’s office in the Proviocial Building, and there wae a good at'endance of members of the Goveramevt sia vlc an! of theBoaru of Trade. Mr Elverkin, who was the first speaker, eu pvasieed tbe Importance of Cco- operation on the parts of the Federel aod Provincia) Governments and the people wiih a uiew to the promotion of tue live stock industry in the maritime provinces, Ihere was BO reason why these provinces by the sea should not re ceive a large share of the live stock trade. Tne climatic sad other conditions were bighly favorable and the people were jist as intelligentas the people of tae ujper provinces, The people of the maritime provinces should leave nothing undone that would be calculated to promote this industry, and the most advantageous rates of transportation should be obtained. Mr. Hodson followed, speaking at con - siderable length. He dealt largely with the matters of transportation and organi- zation, his remarks being largely slong the lines set forth elsewhere in today’s paper. Mr. P. Blake coincided with Mr. Hodson regarding the breeding of live stock, and emphasized the importance of breeding nothing but the best. He thought it was a good thing to have Mr. Hodson address meetings of farmers througbout the country as tbe subject was one of vital im portance to stock-raisere and others. Mr. Geo. E. Hughes, President of the Board of Trade, also expressed his appre~ ciation of Mr. Hodeon’s address. He would like to know what the Federal Government intended doing. He regretted to say that our horse trad: was not what itshould be nor what it had been. He thought the Governmeut should import some good horses. He also thoughta horse breeders association would be a good thing for the Islandproviace. He hoped the visit of M:. Hodeon would be productive of much good. Mr. Hodson, in reply to Mr Hughes, said he had $7,000 for use in his department. But he would not take up any work coutrary to the wishes of the ministry of the day no matter whether that administration was Liberal or Conservative. He urged tbe importance of organizaiion and sys- tem. Without organization nothing could be done. He did not believe in the gov~ ernment making importations and selling them cheaply to the detriment of private enterprise, M:. Robertson urged the importance of promoting the live stock industry and everytbing pertaining to agriculture. Mr Elderkin, referring t> the purchase of thoroughbred borses by the Government, pointed out that such horses, ag a rale, cost more money than privace citizens cared to invest. Mr Horace Haezard spoke of the impor- iauce of direct steamship accomodation for the shipment of live stock as well as other products. lt 18 important thet facilities be afforded for the shipment of live stock after it has been provided by the tarmers. Tbere bas beeo a notable de- cline in the demand for horses of late years, and a a consequence our farmers have not been paying the attention to horee-raiging that they had been giving (bat industry in previous years. Mr. Blake thought it would bea good idea for the Government to import a thoroughbred boree. Bon. Mr. Farquharson thought it wae slow work for the Government to import borses But private enterprise moving in that direction might be subsidised by the Government. Hoo. Mr. McLean thought it was ad- visable to have a thoroughbred horse brought here. But whether the Govern- meot should import such a horse was a question. Mr. Elderkin pointed out that the Stock Breeders Association purposed to bave its annual meeting in Chariotte~- town in November, at which Jeadiug stock breeders and others would epeak. The meeting then adjourned. ‘LAWN TENNIS) Tea players entered the lists on Satur~ day afternoon at Victoria Park, to play a match (men’s doubles).
