The unfortunate toad nas irom time
immemorial been an oblect. of dis-
trust and aversion, especially anwng
rung that a, gentlemen, walking along
a oountry lane, came suddenly ugon
a village boy, bolaboring the crus_ ed
body of e. toad with a heavy strclt,
and omclaiming at each blow. “Ill
larn 'ee to be a toad!" Whereat the
indignant newcomer, seizing the mii-
oroant, by his collar, vigorously ap-
plied a cane to his legs, remarking,
"1'll iam you to be, a. boy!" Thel
popular hatred of the toad, indeed,
is of such antiquity 'and is Still S0
general as to seem ineradicable. That
the creature is not dangerously poi-
sonous it is hopeless to _attempt to
'convince the ordinary rustic. Doubt-
~'less this belief has its origin in the
=acrid secretion which the toad has
ed or annoyed unduly, and which
will cause a dog that has iheautious-
ly picked a, toad up to foam. at.the
mouth. Again, the unoouth appear-
ance of the creature has had much to
do with thp feeling of repulsion with
which it has always been regarded.
"Sqpat like a. toad" is the phraseby
which Milton describes the evil ‘one
essiying to reach the ear of Ever

firm hold on. the to`ad's "misshepen
figure. The belief, not only in the
existence of "toad-stones," but » in
their emcacy as a sovereign remedy
for certain ills, which is still corn-
mon in parts of the country, k at

found in the heads oi old and great
toads,” says Fenton, writing in
1569, “a stone they call borax or
stelon, which being used as rings
give forewarning of venom," In the
Londesborough Collection is 5 silver

They were supposed always to bear
on their suriaoe a figure resembling a
toad, being somewhat similar trin-
kets, I one may imagine, to the
“scaraba.eus" ornament of the Egyp-
tians. Another early writer remarks,
"A toad-stone, called ‘crepandia.,’
touching any pmrt envenomed by the
bite of a rat, wasp, spider, or other
venomous beast, ceases the pain and
"a swelling thereof." It was believed
that when brought near to poison,
_ the stone swea/ted and changed color,
thus conveying to its wearer atirnc-

Perhaps the most' farniliar super-
stition* in regard to toads is that,
still rife, which- supposes them cap-
able of existing for an indefinite peri-
‘ od in the interior of rocks, stories,
~or hermetically scaled cavities. Num-'

remarkable power_ha\'e been brought
forward from time to time. The fol-
lowing example, from an old book, is
typical: “In 1793, Mr. George Wil-

ing. In the middle of the wall he

It is known that toads can exist for

. peculiarities have had much to do
with the superstition in regard to
their supposed penchant for a. her-
mit/s life. The fallacy, however, was
completely exposed by Dean nook-
land, father of Frank Buckland, the
.great naturalist, who wen; fp tho

theory by an exhaustive series of
experiments. It need only to be re-

eater,” contained a reilection upon
the already much reproached crea-
ture. The opprobrious epithet, how-
ever, has a very diderent origin,
which, though having nothing to do
with the strict subject of this
ticle, _it may perhaps be of interest
to give here. "Toad-eater" is u cor-.
ruption from a Spanish word "ml-
