A ‘imber Limits Again, ry Uhariton's Resolution Defeated ee Orrawa, Aug. 6 In the House yest rrday ne his amended resolution " regarding timber mits. He paraded a lot of exploded ; He declared that members of I arliament should not lease timber limits When Sir John Tiompson extorted from him the admission that he was a lessee himself, being confounded with the aflida- hal made, which ws altogether inconsistent with the fact, Sir Richard Vartwright came to his rescue and apologiz- ed for him, as also for the acts of the McKenzie Government, in letting timber limits. Orrawa, Aug. 6. _ In the Tarte-MeGreevy case, Thomas Mc- Greevy was examined. He gave an em- phatic denial of Murphy’s allegations and of Robert McGreevy’s testimony. State- ment after statement sworn to by these men, he unhesitatingly declared to be false. He never received the moneys alleged to have been paid him by Robert McGreevy snd Murphy from the pro- ceeds of the Connolly contracts. He ex- plained his connection with the steamer Admiral, admitting that he was the real, although no the registered owner. | Nothing had ever been stated in his pres- ence abouut psyments of money to Sir Hector Langevin. He had received fifty thousand dollars from Cinnoliys firm for poiitical pus poses between 1883 and 1887, snd spent itin elections in the Province of Quebec. As forthe rest of the charges, he gave them a distinct and categorical denial: McGreevy’s evidence has awaken- ed cousiderable surprise in consequence of reports circulated by the Grits | that he was gomg to make a fu!l confession of guilt to save Langevin. People are beginning tosee that there is ano.her side to the story. There was a great deal of excite- ment yesterday, consequent upon the charges made in the Senate Railway Com- mittee by the Solicitor of the Ontario Bank, that one hundred thousand dollars uf subsidy, voted by the (Quebec Govern- ment and charged as paid by the Chaleur Railway Company, had been intercepted by Mercier and his colleagues and used for political purp ses.
