Slow Boat Fran llamiilea , By Mlelllll Illltlnge INSTRUCTIONS In the small cabin, Dr. Pr-ins looked down at Captain zakas with disgust. I 'You have not the appearance of a ship's captain." he snapped. zakss passed a hand over his bristly chin. "I was about to spruce myself up." he explained. "There has been so much doing-and by usual rou- tine has been thrown out." "Therewill be more." said Prinz. "The sooner you are ready. the better." "I'll shave right away." Zakas agreed. He could tell that the doc- tor was in one of his disagreeable moods. In consequence he was eager to placate. "You'll listen to me first." said Prim brutally. "We have been forced to expedite our plans. This has been brought about by your own lack of control. Had you kept Johansen on board last evening we should have been spared all this. I warn you Captain, that you will have to behave in a more satis- factory manner when the voyage starts." "Yes," said Zakas, meekly. "The passengers will come aboard to-nightPsoon after sun- set. The quarters assigned to them must be ready. You will leave the two best cabins for two who are more important than the others. one is an elderly man-the other his daughter. I expect that they will be accompanied by Dr. Rutter. You will direct that all possible attention is to be given to them. Any instance of dlscourtesy from the crew will be the subject oi disciplinary action. Is that clear?" "Perfectly clear, Doctor Prinz," said Zakas. "If you can give me an idea of the time of their arrival. I will be on the gangway to receive them." - "If you look no smarter than you do at the moment, I would not consider it advisable." said Prinz cuttly, "However, it does not arise. I do not know the time. We plan to be ready for sailing any time after midnight. The exact time, oi curse, is a navigational matter and will be left in your hands. He- member-there must be no last- minute troubles." "Everything will he in order. doc- tor. I promise you," said the cap- tain eagerly. "I leave all the sauing details to you. During the day you will hold any talks with certain people ashore that may be necessary." Zakas became more confident, He even ventured to a smile. "Those matters shall receive attention." he said smoothly. Prinz gave a Jerky nod and left the cabin. on deck he encountered Lacoste. The Frenchman evaded his steely glance. Prinz he-sitateui; then said. "I have been giving the captain certain instructions. I ex- pect he will wish to see you about them." "I'll go to him. doctor." said La- coste, obviously welcoming the ex- cuse to get away. Prinz made no further comment. He went down the companionway and was ashore within a few sec-3 onds. Lacoste watched his erect' military figure. "Salle bochc!" he murmured, and spat over the side. Then he went to the captain's cabin. Zakas was striped to the waist, shaving over a small bowl in one corner. He turned sharply, thin gave a sigh of relief. "Oh, it's you," he said. "I thought it was Dr. Prinz returning." La- coste perched himself on the table. ”He's gcne ashore," he said harsh- ly. "He told me that you wanted to see me."
