The fortifications of San Juan are thus drscribed by the New York Herald : It is a difficult harbor to enter on ac~ count of the narrowness of the channel, and tor the same reason is capable of be~ ing easily defended by mines. It is de- fended by fortifications, thaprincipal one of which i« Morro Castle. On_ the right bank is the castle ot San Juan de la Cruz. On the Cenedo shoal, northeast of the city, is the castle of San Cristobal, which detends the city on the landside. Upon the barracks of this castle is Caballero fort, with twenty-two guns. Below the castle isa dril] ground, with batteries directed towards the sea, the land aod the drawbridge of the castle. Then follow three large ravelines—San Carlos, occupyiag the top of the hill; Principe, on the slop? ef Cuesta, and Principal. All these fortifications are in great part cut out of solid rock. San Cristobal Caatle is connected ,with Morro Ca-tle on the vorth by a wall of modera construction. Starting from tbe southern part of San Christobal Castle and following the edge of the bay is # line of bulwark leading to the fortress of Santa Catalina, the resi- dence of the governor general. Between Morro Castle and the north coast there is in the middle cf the entrance to the bays aemall fort called Cannelo, which by it position obliges vessels attempting to force an Sentrace to pass between its fire and that of Morro Caatle. San Jusn’s capture asa landing bese would involve a long and hazardous bombardment by the American flzet. Itis probable that a landiog will be made at some other point aud that San Juan wil be taken by combined land and sea opera- tions—possibly by «# prolonged siege. There are numerous smal! bays and inlets onthe worth coast where landings could be made. Probably the best of these is at Arrecibo, to tbe west of San Juan, but cconected with that city bya railway running near the coast. Porto Rico is defended by a considerable force including 7,200 regulars and 12,006 volunteers. The headquarters of the army is at San Juan, but the troops are divided among eight other stations, As the Is- land is small in comparison with Cuba, they could be rapidly concentrated at San Juav, which is to be immediately at- tacked. a = -aa No Cocaine in Dr. A.W. Vancouver, July 26—W. L. Foster the Jatest arrival from Skaguav from White Horse Rapids says: I had along conversation with Major Steele, last man out from Dawscn, and heinformed me and many Othersthat the output of gold this season would be at least $22,005,000. The Major also stated that one of the boats running from Dawson to St. Michaels would alowe.curry $12,000,000 in gold. I consider the estimate made by Major Steele a decidedly conservative one. He also stated thatthe Kiondike was over~ crowded with men whowere not accus- tomed to hardships, or in fact hard work of any kind, and that many of them had practically decided to return to the United States. The omtput of gold,I was told, will be larger than was ever expected by the most sanguine, and I expect another big rush to Alaska this fall. Major Steele also said that food in Dawson was plenti- ful and cheap, it now being possible to buy flour for $5 per sack, which is considered a very low figure. PRINCE OF WALES’ ACCIDENT. Another Surgeon Called in, Rontgen Rays Being Used. Loxponx, Jaly 20.—A_ bulletin issued last evening at Marlborough house says : “The Prince of Wales has passed a fairly comfortable day, considering the severe accident from which be is suffering.” Tne affair causes some anxiety. Another surgeon has been called in, and Rontgen rays are being employed. It is feared that the accident will compel the Prince to remain indoors for a month, The Prince of Wales is quite cheerful, although he has had to endure consider- able pain. Itis understood that the ex~ amination and consultation of surgeoms will be resumed tomorrow. Fears are expressed that the icjury to the patella (knee-cap) may result in a permanent weakness, perhaps in lameness.
