[April ] ‘88 sciiagiagypinmcsniual The Americans are without question a go ahead and wide-awake class of people, and generaily a step in advance of their Canadian cousins; and with the wony and turmoil of active business, and mad haste to get rich, they are fast undermining their health and making physical wrecks of themselves, It is said that ‘‘ prevention is better than cure, and we believe it, but the most of us never think of prevention until need of a cure comes. Our American cousins saw the need of something to build up the system some- thing to soothe and quiet the over-taxed nerves, and they are becoming wide-awake enough to leave rum and quack mixtures alone, and instead are using celery as food and medicine combined; and it is enormous the amount of celery they consume. We heara great ado about a -medicine called * Paine s Celery Compound,”” We know noth- ing about it, but please note it is called ‘Celery Compound,” it is significent to say the least of it. Paris, Oct. 23. General Boulanger was present in the Chamber of Deputies to-day. Baron Sou- beyran stated that the enormous propor- tions of the public debt demanded a redue- tion in the government staff, and the sale of state railways. M. Roche, reporter of the budget com- mittee, declared the criticisms were exag- gerated. It was not the French expendi- tures alone that we re increasing. Al} European budgets were augmenting. Eu- rope has been transferred into an immense iutrenched camp. France was not free in her movements; she was bound by fatality of events, and it was impossible to isolate herself.
