Hands that ire » when they are held down often pass for exceptionally pretty ds w cause their owner deftly con ves to keep them up so that the blood 1] not settle in them. Children should not be allowed to crack their knucles to enlarge in a hideous way. Some hands are naturally pretty and some are naturally homely, but many somely hands can be greatly improv- ed by udicious care. One’s employ- | ment has a great deal to do with the look ot the hands, of course and the harder the work is on the hand the more care is required to keep it in | good condition. An abnormally small hand is not attractive. The hand should be in proportion to the rest of the body. It should have character, ' too, and should be used expressively. | Indeed the hand does much to express (the character. When its owner is a | nonenity, the hand is merely a mach- |ine. When the owner is an individu- | al, the hand follows suit. To keep the hand smooth use a few | drops of this lotion after washing : Three ounces of rosewater. ' | Ten drops of carbolic acid. A certain philosopher declares that a woman is known by her mouth. Not by the words that issue therefrom, but by the shape and color of the lips, and the lines and dimples that gather about this important feature. He is support- ed in histheory by physiognomists, who all endeavor to impress us with the fact that no woman with the small red lipped, “Cupid bow,” mouth so praised in song and story, was ever in tellectual or generous of heart, and it it is consoling to those whose mouths are not in accordance with the lines of beauty laid down by the poets to be told that a “wide straight mouth, with strong, white teeth,” denotes the wo- man of superior intelligence, goodness of heart, strength of mind and a thousand and one other sterling quali ties which we all like to think we pos- sess. The whole affair was purely acci dental, but it was the means of bring ing much happiness to a young and comparatively unknown girl, and put- ting her feet on the first rung of the ladder of success, for she is now a famous actress and singer, Home Rule. The following rules for the govern- ment of children, which were first pre— sented in: one of Jacob Astor’s books, are said to have been of great service to many teachers. Both teacher and parent might profit by their practice: When you consent, consent cordial- ly. When you refuse, refuse finally. When you punish, punish good- naturedly. Commend often. Never scold. SALT RHEUM TORTURES Die away before the magical effect of Dr. Chase’s Ointment The tortures of Salt Rheum are almost be- yond human endurance, and asthe flesh be- comes raw, and the itching and burning increase, the suffering is so intense as to almost drive one crazy. In desperation salves and ointments are applied, only to give rise to further disappoint. ment and despair. But there is hope. There is assurance that you can be cured just as scores and hundreds ef others have been by using Dr. Chase's ¢ Ointment. | Mr. Jchn Siron, of Aultsville, Ont., writes: ‘‘For seven years I was a sufferer from Salt Rheum, and my hands were so bad I had to wear greased gloves.
