. ing in daylight. n Fridiiy. March 9, 1956 By Thornton DANNY DIGS OUT who falls to look will never see. where opportunity may he. -out Mother Nature. Danny Meadow Mouse had been running along in a tunnel dug by Miner the Mole. It was just under the grass roots. When Danny reach- ed the end be dug his way Ill! through the roots untilglie cau- tiously poked his head out and made sure no danger was there. It was broad daylight. and Dan- ny doesn't like to show himself in the daylight. He loves the dark- ness because there are fewer hun- gry foil to see him then. But Dan- ny was glad of the daylight now. He was glad because of what he saw just a little way from him. it was the flat top of a big rock just above the level of the ground. All the rest of the rock was bur- ied in the earth. Over on that big flat rock. going to it and coming from it. were happy feathered folk--small feathered folk who would be around only in daylight. Danny knew by the way they act- ed that they were finding some- thing good to eat on that rock. what was good for them pro 'y was good for him. He wished that he dared run right over there. but he didn't. No. "r. he didn't dare show him- self at all. There was no knowing what hungry eyes might be watch- ing. He couldn't see around every- where. and his eyes were not loo good anyway. Eyes of folks who spend most of their time in the dark are not much good for see- Those birds were having a won- derful time over on that big flat rock. He knew it by the twittering and calls which he could hear one of those birds was Tommy Til the Chickadee. Another was Welcome Robin. Welcome Robin had come up from the Sunny South early this year and he was very. very glad of a little help from Farmer Brown's Boy. The latter had put out raisins especially for Welcome Robin. How Welcome Robin did love those raisinsi He came several times a day to that big flat rock to get them. The Guardian, Page 9 mlnrgtm 5- ' - fr: -1- xilllls xf ' ”' ;?”f I 1 f). llltm ' . There was wet for Downey Woodpecker and his cousin Hairy. There were sunflower and other kinds of seeds for the seed-lovers. Some of these had been scattered on the big rock with the raisins. At the feeding station was a doughnut. Of course. Danny Meadow didn't know these things, but it was clear that work had traveled far through the Green Forest among the feather- ed folk. So from morning ttil night birds were coming and go- ing at the feeding station and the big flat rock. Yank Yank the Nuthatch flew down to the big rock and picked up a sunflower seed. He carried it in the tip of his bill as he flew over toward the nearest tree in the Old Orchard. There he plan- ned to wedge it in a crotch and then with his sharp bill crack it open to get the meat inside. Just as Yank Yank flew over where Danny Meadow Mouse was hiding under the grass. he drop- ped that aeed. He followed it down trying to catch it in the air. but missed it. It fell in the grass right in front of Danny. Yank Yank was going to go down into the grass after it. but he saw Danny and changed his mind. Danny , ' on that sunflower seed. Alberta Bill To Scrap To Improve Education h'l)lll0N'l'0N ICP) Alberta plans to scrap the voting system now in use in her provincial elec- tions and return to the traditional "x" system of marking ballots. A bill introduced in the legisla- ture Wednesday night would do away with the transferable vote system, used in ridings which elect one member. and the proportional representation system. used in the mult' lc-member ridings of Cal- gary and Edmonton. Fred C. Colborne. Social Credit minister without portfolio who in- troduced the bill. said the return to the "x" ballot is proposed be- cause of the high. percentage of ballots spoiled under the present system. Under the single - transferable vote system. two or more counts are necessary if the leading can- didate does not have a majority over the combined vote of his op- ponents on the first count. Second choices on the trailing candidates” ballots are distributed to others in the race until one candidate has a majority. Out Our Way WELL.'lZ3CUT A LONG SPLINE N THE DIPLOMA By J. R.
