'\ ,“> ' Tommies 6 U.P.E.I. 5 The Tommies hadn't won a game in years and, after we nosed them out in Fred: ricton we prophesied that, with their determination, they would beat some team thisryear...little suspe- cting that it would be us . It is easy for detr- actors to say that wexblew this one but we do not see it this way as it seemed to us that Saint Thomas :23 this game rather than. us losing it and got fan- tastic goaltending in do- ing so. First period end- ed 3—2 for them , the se- cond 4-4, and they got the first two goals in‘the th— ird. Overall we outshot \ them 54—35...23;9 in the third and declining per— iod. Our goalscorers were McCarron, MacLean, Brown, \. . ~— . c. ‘smrop.n.m.e.m s. ‘s u“ nu: Ulihv..._'l’l,uid ’Carmicheal, and Dunn. We particularily liked the performance of Donnie Brpwn as he hit well and carried the puck a lot.. We also liked wayne Ber— nard and Dave MacLean but the performance of Blake Kennedy in the STU goal was superlative...we al— 'most;tied it up in the last few seconds and so lost another cliffhanger. U.P.E.I. 3 Mount A 2 And it almost happened again ..with the clock showing seconds to,go and the pan— thers just hanging on, Pete Hazelhurst, trying for his third goal of the . 'game and instead of bou- ncing in it carromed out and our Panthers had th— emselves a hockey game instead of being involved in another overtime tie qhich we have had so much reason to fear (0 won 4 lost). BecaUSe these were teams with not-so-good ‘- records we heard some op— inions that this was not a well-played game but we thought it most entertai- ning and liked the play of both teams...our opi— nion was justified later in the week as the Moun- ties upset highly rated Moncton 4-2...For Mount A ETed McComb showed whynhe was picked for last year's 'All Star team. For the , 'Panthers we liked wayne :Bernard who was in high gear all through the con— test. We'd also like to pick Shawn McIsaac and Gene Power although we thought the whole team looked good. , V Pantherettes 61 SMU 38 The girls played a good game but, with a 5-7 re— cord for the season will miss the playoffs. How— ever, being composed m mostly of Freshmen and VSophmores we look for a 'most-successful season next year. In this con- \, test Sue Cosh had 14 points, Janet Trainor lo, and Rose King 9. 7 U.N.B. 74 U.P.E.I. 70 I U;N.B. 64 U.P.E.I. 75 In Basketball the Panth- ers made their playoff objective as they split in Fredricton. They lost in ‘ ’, on Friday night with "Mi— ghty Mite" Mike Connally sitting out a one game suSpension.for making like Mohammad Ali in the previous game in Sackv— ille. With him back in the Saturday game we won giving us the dubious ho nor of facing the number two team in the nation - Saint Mary's. Art Laffin had 24 points in the fir- st game and 20 in the lsecond.’They go to Mem- orial in two weeks time and this week will play two exhibition games there...first against U of Moncton and then ag— ainst an All-Star local team. Do not miss the second one as it will be interesting to see how noted players of the past such as Posty Con- nolly, Lennie Sirios, Bob Gray, et. a1. show I the effect of advancing waistlines. The latter stages of this game sho- uld be particularily in— teresting}!!! "Puff... Puff...Puff". Jamie Bal—_ lem won't be with the team this week as he and Jerry MacDonald will be co-captains of the P.E,I. bas—etball team at the Winter games. We won't prophesy that they will the picked as the BEST *players at the Games but if real honest effort and the give-it-everyth- ing-I've—got spirit get npoints they will lead the crowd. The Panther Booster Club had its annual mee— ting last week and Postie Connally who has been do— ing a tremendous job as Chairman pro—tem, was pi— cked as President for the coming year. Assisted by a strong executive we vhave high hopes for fut- ure assistance to UPEI athletics. There was much discussion and healthy disagreement“..certainly with the great upsurge in basketball interest the gym will be too small to accomadate half those wishing to see the games ...a request to move to a larger site was made by some...in hockey the pro— blem is the same...but there is understandable The Cadre, Tuesday," February J], 1975, page 9 llould The Facilities reluctance to play the home games elsewhere and in doing so reliquish ithe advantage of playing‘ in the familiar surround— ing of the gym or rink where practices are held. Another item of discussion was the suggested celebr— ity dinner where, it is hoped, will top off the athletic season and pro— vide the club with funds for the coming year... you have your problems Postie.... . . . . . ..l
