A little lob put. oil grows into a bis job. Young Coyote, because of his youth knowing no better, had tried to dig his way down into Yap Yap'a underground home. All he had succeeded in doing was tiring himself out: and mining the line doorstep around the entrance to Yap Yap's home. He and Mrs. Yap Yap had been very proud o! that doorstep. It was more than- lust a doorstep; it was a lookout and a dun. Now it was in ruins, only a llttle o! it lolt. and the doorway around which it. had been built was ruined also, dug larger, much too large. Jolly. round. bright Mr. Sun had been shining his brightest and hot- teet. Now great black clouds were spreading out. and building up. Boon they would hide Mr. Sun and cover all the blue, blue sky. They were rain clouds, the kind of clouds that mean that a great deal o1’ water will (all in a very short time. The little Yapville folks know just . what such clouds mean. and what can and sometimes does happen when there is too much water all at once. New all but Yap Yap and Mrs. Yap Yap were hurrying to eat as much as they could beloro the storm, tor alter the storm it probably would be dark. They don't. come out alter dark. Even i! it were not too dark It was likely to be too wet. There might even be water standing on the ground. It had happened sometimes. Because o1’ this they had built their raised doorsteps completely around their doorways to keep the water from running down inside their houses. Thus those doorsteps were also dams. Now Yap Yap and Mrs. Yap Yap had no doorstep, and o! course no dam around the entrance to their house in the ground. They didn't think about supper. No sir, they didn't think about their stomachs at all. All they thought about was rebuilding that doorstep-dam at least enough to keep out the water should there be too much o! it in the storm they knew was coming. Both went to work. They didn't waste a minute. There were no minutes to waste, and they knew it. As last as they could they raked or pushed back with their paws the earth that coyote had dug away and scattered about. Mrs. Yap Yap brought up some lrom down inside and repaired that doorway, patting and pounding it. in place with her paws and even with her blunt nose. Around this outside Yap Yap was building a. wall o! earth in the same iray, using his paws and nose in the some manner. It. had to be pressed and pounded to hold together. 0t course, any builder would know that. Ii’ it were just scraped in place and left loose a. heavy rain would quickly wash it away. The ground there was ilat and level, what is called a. prairie. That is the reason the doorstep- dam must go all the way around the entrance. To leave an open- ing anywhere wouldn't be sale. Had it. not been for those great. black clouds climbing up and up and spreading over all the sky there would have been noflneed ot hurry. They could have taken their time. They could have gone out to supper with their neighbors. They could have waited until the next. day to begin work on a new doorstep. Even now they didn't have to have a doorstep. They could do very well without it. But they did have to have a. dam. With that storm threatening they didn't dare try to do without at least a. low dam. They would make it as high as they could, but it couldn't be made wide, not nearly as Wide as it should be. There wouldn't be time. But with all their hurry they didn't once torget to keep watch. While one was pressing and pounding the earth lri place the other would alt. up loi- a quick look around. And all the busy eaters out in the grass were doing the lame thing. That ‘Coyote might still be somewhere around. They hadn't tor-gotten him. , Thunder was rumbling and grumbling and now and then a llash oi lightning darted ICPOSS those black clouds. The lirst raindrops. great big ones. tell. YOU"! Coyote remembered an old BadBer hole not tar away. l-la raced for it now. And all the Yapville folk raced tor their homes. ._________ MIDIDLE AGES SCHOLARSHIP Universities, In- the modem y west would have an excellent sense or the term, sprang up in q- chance. the 12th and 13th centuries.
