E. J. Umphrey, Director o! Sales, has announced that the new "Rocket” power plant, which will be available on a limited number o! “lilutursmic? Series “88's”, is the same high-compression, eight-cylin- der, vaive-in-head engine which GM engineers and research experts have had under process oi develop- ment ior several years. According to Mr. Umphroy, the compression ratio oi the “Rocketfl is ‘i125 to l. With only minor me- chanical modifications, this ratio can be stepped up in future models to i2 to 1, as soon as higher octane iuels are available. "The ‘Rocket’ engine," Mr. Um- phrey revealed, “is the most pow- erful ever installed in an Oldsmo- bile. Iis 135 horsepower is an in- crease oi 20 horsepower over Olds- mobile’s former eight-cylinder en- gins." While the “R-ocket" engine is available in the'serles J98", the Entirely‘ new body simplifies the frontal appearance and accents the "Futuramic" eiiect of broadness and lowness. In ad- dition, an entirely new world sym- bol hss been mounted on the lore- part 0i the hood. This symbol foi- lovrs the gmeral design oi Oldsmo- bile's new “Futuramic" emblem. Both Series "76", and "88" have an entirely new Fisher body oi "Futuramic" design, with greatly improved vision ior a.ll passengers and wider seats for increased rid- ing condor-t. The rear seat, ior ex- ample, is seven inches wider than The previous "'76" model. The 1949 Series "76” “mturamic” Oldsmobile has a wheel-base oi 119% inches and an over-all length oi 20B inch- es. New appointments in the mod- els. oi both series includ. an im- proved steering column, which en- closes the Hydra-Matic drive con- trol shalt and the automatic shut- oii ior the direction signal. "From an engineering stand- point," said Mr. Uniphrey, "the most distinctive feature oi the "Rocket" is its vibration-free con- plained, “has always been an ob- compression. Oldsmobile have solv- ed the problem by designing a cylinder block so rigidly re-iniorced that there is not the slightest dis- tortion under the three and a hali ton pressures developed over each piston. Also, the crankshait has been shortened and supported with main bearings between each crank- shaft throw. The piston stroke has been designed shorter than the cylinder diameter to reduce centri- fugal iorces and cylinder yvalibear- ing pressures.
