[3393.00.13 The Cadre is at the present time facing strife from within as well as from without. This could very well be the final issue of the Cadre for this year, and from this staff. Following is the delemma the Cadre and its present staff face. Firstly, the main reason for no cussequent issues this year is the simple fact that there is no one who cares enough to give some time in the auctual production of the paper. For the issue you are now reading a stag— gering total of five people worked to get this issue to the printers. The time is upon us all to prepare for the end of the semester and it is not possible for a hand- full of people to put out a decent paper and still main- tain a good academic standard. Therefore the paper is finished for this year. However this is not our main concern what is , is the student union through its articulate spokesman Norbert Moran, has decreed that the Cadre must now have an editor for next year. This is contrary to the magor- 'ity of the present staff for two reasons. ' 1) me feel that the editor should be chosen next fall. 39 we feel that the editor must be elected by the paper staff and that this person be ratified by council. The fact that this may be the last issue for this year has no bearing on Moran's desire to have an editor selected this year for next year. I fail to see Moran's logic how can his efficiency be doubted if a paper which is not being published does not have an editor. Instead Moran has called for nominations from the entire student body. However it is my opinion that a student should work on the paper before he becomes the editor. How can one be selec- ted from persons not even working on the paper or those who have been a member but don't have the initiative to stick it out. Also Moran has asked a certain student to apply for the position of editor contrary to the policy of other student newspapers where the staff are the ones “who chose an editor. , we asked Moran why we could not appoint an interim editor untill the fall of next year. He replied to the effect that he was not waiting for us any longer and that the editor for next year would be chosen at this time. The present Cadre staff feel for the sake of freedom of the press no outside interference shall be imposed upunthe paper. The Cadre at present has come a long way from the beginning of this year yet the student union desires that its policies come before the ethic of good journalism. The student union no more than the adminis— tration can make a puppet out of the student newspaper. The campus press exists for the benefit of all students and it is not intended to be an information sheet which would tend to support the student union and those the student union supports. For these reasons I feel that the paper should be in the hands of the staff and not the student union. \ ' Richard O'Brien THE CADRE Member of the Canadian’ ~University Press.
