From a chemival point of iew man 18 yaed of thirteen elements, o! which wre gasea and eight are solids, If consider the chemical composition of the average weight of 1541 bs, we will find that he is composed io arge part of oxygen, which is ion a tate of extreme compression. In fact, aman weighing 154 pounds contains ‘ aman ol inet y-seven pounds of oxygen, the vol- ame of which at ardinary temperature, would exceed 980 cubic feet. The hy- lrogen is much less in quantity, there being less than 15 pounds, but which in a free state, would2occupy a volume of 2800 cuble feet. The three other gases are nitrogen, nearly four pounds, chlorine, about twenty-six ounces, and) fluorine, three and a quarter ounces. Of the solids carbon stands at the head of | the metalloids, there {being forty-eight pounds. Next comes phosphorus, twenty-six ounces, and sulphur, three and a quarter ounces. Ihe most abun- | fant metal is calcium, more than three | pounds; next, potassium, two and a half sodium, two and a quarter ouness, and, lastly, iron, one and a quarter ounce. Itis needless to say that the various combinations made by these thirteen elements are almost in- numerable. ounces; —_— -— wee -— — The Effect of Thought. Think ugliness and be ugly; think) beauty and be beautiful; think old age| and grow old; think immortal youth | and be always youthful. It is our thought that moulds us. To repine| wer our faults is to fix them] neradicably in our characters; let us| go develop our hope and fault to the | attainment of noble souls that we may | forget we ever had a fault. «And let us be equally generous with our} seighbor ; let us pick out the undevelop- | ed beauties of their characters, and, | prejecting our imaginations upon tho | lines of their development, strive to} see them as they ought to be, rather | than as they are. Faults of character, and even vices, | perish when their existence is ignored. | Life purifies itself as it advances, if we keep thought from stirring up its} dregs so constantly. Let the dregs} sink out of sight and out of mind; let thought dwell upon nothing but the pellucid beauty of the top current, and | presently we eball grow away _ evil. aa i cereal Her Excellent Memory. | A lady walkiog into a city store a few days ago and enquired for the| carpet department, to which she was! conducted. ‘You see,” she explained, “IT bought a piece of carpet here for my -parlor, and Samuel, my husband, ssys nothin’ will do but that we must save more like it. Sol want to get | he remnent. I don’t remember the clerk that waited upon me, but I'd know the carpet if I set eyes upon ” Three clerks were kept an hour ind a half unrolling carpeting for her identification, but the desired remnent didn’t come to light. * Dear me, this is very disappointing,” said the iady with atone of vexation. “I felt sure I could fiod the rest of it.” “ When did you buy the goods madam?’ in- quired the clerk. “Ob, 22 or 23 years years ago. I know it was about the time of Lee’s surrender, and Samuel wishes to celebrate, and—” “ Ah, madam,” said the clerk, “I fear the remnant has been sold.”—-Buffalo Courier.
