Snbsoriniion Mgr. THE MORNING GUARDIAN OUR RIGHTS iN HUDSON'S BAY. Ocnada being about to assert and main- tain that Hudson’s Bay is a closed sea, the situation is being vigorously diaeusscd hy sundry United States newspapers and in some American magazines. These discussions are of interest as tending to show what are the weaker paints of our case. The claim of Canada is based on the British rights “to the Bay and Strelghis of Hudson, together with all lands, seas. leaeosete," etc, transferred to the British crown by lraueo in 1813. The American objection is based upon the hot that Iiunson`s straits leading to Hadacn’s Bay are some forty-five miles ln width, and that the water beyond the three miles limit from the Canadian shore is a part of the “high ses." Also that by the treaty of Washington, 1818, Amari- A can flshermenl were given equal righis with the British on the west coast of _ THE 0UA*&!>IAl¥. . Newfoundland and ‘northward lsdelisl te1y.’ Tilly also claim that fm- sixty years past the whale fishers of liew Bedford- Haaa, have narsusd their prey in Bndscn`s Bt-reits and Bay, and are pras- tleally the only ones who have frequented those waters for that purpose. The nmatieris also discussed by F. P- Mcblrath of Newfoundland in the North American Review and the fact is pointed out that the Government cf` Canada not long ago sent a steamer iran St. Jchn's with an oiiicer of the N. W. Mounted Police, commissioned as “Governor ef Hu'lson`s Bay and the regions adjacent thereto," and with e detachment of police, with instructions to warn Off Bild If necessary to expel alleged trespassers. Under these circumstances there is an easy possibility of the liurison`s Bay question becoming somewhat acate with- in the not distant fatorc. We have to thank Editor' Irvin of the P. E. Island Magazine for a very pretty ard artistic sohyenlr of the New Year. i- THE DAY OF HIRACLES NOT PAST.
