The 2,300 ton Hogue was travel- ling fast and damaged the trawler considerably. In the early days of the Ice- landic fishing dispute the North- ern Foam was boarded by Ice l-anders and “recaptured” by the British frigate Eastbourne. The coast guard said the North- ern Foam was one of two British trawlers fishing inside the 12-mile limit Iceland now claims. The Icelanders were preparing to board her, when the Hogue ar- rived at full speed in response to a call for help from the Northern Foam. The coast guard said the Hogue struck the trawler such a heavy blow that it was knocked on to its side and they feared it would sink. The boat deck collapsed and a lfieboat was destroyed. But the trawler righted itself. are now visiting in Howl-an. P1usv111e, on the night of June I 19, 1958, when the motor vehicle received it. The boys, according to Yeo, asked him to take them to Alberton and MacKenzie re- plied he had no gas. The group offered to buy the gas and the accused agreed to drive them to Alberton, witness said. Yeo, stated, Ian Strang drove the MacKenzie car while the ac- cused got in the back. The wit- ness stated that MacKenzie was “in bad condition — no state to drive.” He added he could smell liquor from his breath also. After a couple of brief stops on the way to Alberton for vani_qus reasons, Yeo said they went to within about one mile of Elmsdale then MacKenzie de- cided his wife might be worried about him and told the group he would have to go back home. ASKED TO DRIVE He asked to drive and took over the wheel from Strang. He reuportedly drove for a short distance (nearly a mile accord- ing to later evidence) and then way.
