Aug. $0 - (OP) — A shortage o‘ equipment is de- laying 05C plans for the expan- sion of regular and frequency modulation broadcasting services, In‘. Aulustm Frigon, general man- ager of the 0B0, said today. The plane called for the eatab- lishment o! PM transmitters at nflnnipeg and Vancouver, but equipment could not yet be ob- tained to carry out the projects. Dr. Frigon said the Vancouver transmitter could be established as soon as equipment became avail- able. but a number of matters would have to be cleared up be- fore work could start in Wiiini- peg. The whole program of ex- pansion would-be dismissed at next month's meeting oi the Board of Governors. He said that the GBO laae not not yet heard what policy mem- bers of the American Federation of Musicians plan to adopt with respect to PM broadcasting in Canada. However. the fact that the policy was still unknown had nothing to do with the delay in the. building of. the new FM trans- mitters. He said that in the United States the Federation would not permit the same program to go out simultaneously from an am- plitude broadcasting station and. from an FM station. The Federa- tion regarded FM as a separate system from AM and ruled that its members were entitled fori pay for both FM and AM broad-' caste. l Walter Murdoch of Toronto, Ca-l nudian representative of the Fed-I oration, indicated before the radio‘ committee of the Commons during] the recent session that a some-j what similar policy would be fol-ll lowed in Canada. l When asked what the Fedora-y lion's views with respect to FM| broadcasting in Canada. he said,’ m; mm" w“ “d” °°"5‘d°“" m about 1250.000 men and 130.00 . officers. Aug. 3O - (Q) —1n the face o_f llie unfriendly and at times scnrnful attitude of the Soviet Union and its satellites and the ave-wed American policy of helping potential victims to ward off Communist conquest, the arm- ed forces of the Uflfted States have shrunk to an alarming state of weakness. Probably" never before in peace time has there been so much talk of large scale war. yet the strik- ing power of the Unitcrl States ~- krealcst of any country in history lWO Scars ago — has dwindled to a more shadow of what it was. Of greatest concern to those who bear the responsibility of defence —nnd offence if that becomes ne- res-wry —- is the weakness of the Air Force. When the war ended the United Staics had an Air Force- of 2,300.- 000 men and almost unlimited air- craft. Today the personncll has shrunk l0 a litlle more than 300,- 000 and operable aircraft have dis- appeared with similar speed.
