His Grace called attention to the fact that Avon and Prince Edward Island dcancries have been the ban- ner deaneries this year. ' -J ,__....,._ how hugo it success was "The Man ot the Hour,” shown at the People’s some time ago, when the house was almost inadequate to ai'l’ord even standing room to the overwhelming crowds that endeavoured to sec the picture. Equally as good a picture in every respect ns that, it not better than it, was the magnillcent five-reel drama, “The Pit,” put on at the Peo- ple's Theatre last evening, The story is one oi! passion, from beginning to cnd,-thc tender passion oi’ love in the woman on the one hand, and the all- abscrhing. overpowering passion oi' greed, on the other, greed for material gain and the pomp and pride asso- ciated with it. Scores of interesting scenes were included in the “Scen- ,ario," and a. particularly impressive incident is u speculative wheat "sale" ‘at the Board of Trade Rooms in Chi- cago, where hundreds of men are seen in the desperate, cnervating business of “doing” the otherffeilow in n legal way. Jadwln, a splendid type of Am- erican flnancier, with a sound and growing business, meets Cresscr, 'a Chicago spcculator, who, utter several futile attempts, succeeds in inducing him to join him in a wheat deal. Jad- win in thc meantime, through Cresscr, meets Laura, tt beautiful girl and af- ter a. pretty love scene, the two be- come engaged and are married. Jad- win is very solicitous for the welfare and happiness of his young wife for some time, but nt lcngth the invidious fascination of the gamble of business seizes him und, buried in stock quo- tations and speculation literature, he gradually neglects her. A thwarted ,rivnl in love, taking advantage of the situation, tries hard to poison the girl'.s mind against hcr husband and get her to abscond with him. While sho is yet in o. state of indecision she learns of the failure of Jadwin; and, realising her only duty, dismisses the other man and devotes herself to con- soilng her broken husband. The dcnouement is highly dramatic. This 1 is one of the best pictures ever shown here and no one should miss it.
