GRAND CANYON FLAGSTAFF‘, Aria, April 7.—'I‘l1e Grand Canyon, world famous scenic gpot, has become the object of a search for wealth by mining men who report the finding of mercury in suiiicient quantity to justify large scale mining operations. in, Ghwlottetown LINDSAY, Oal., April 0 (U. P.)—~ Mirage avenue here is not what ite name might imply. It la a street of shade trees, green lawns and large homes-and not a mirage in a mile Returns From Visiting Toronto Rev. R. Hensley Stavert, Moderator Moderator of the Maritime Synod, of the Maritime Synod, ada returned a few days ago from Toronto and Montreal, where he had been spending some days after hav- ing attended the annual. meeting of the Board of Sunday Schools and Young Peoples‘ Societies of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, which was called to meet in Toron- to on March 19th. The Board held its meetings in St. ndrew's Institute and continued in session for two days. The reports of the work being done by the S. Schools and Young Peoples‘ Societies throughout the Dominion of Canada were very encouraging. This was especially true of quite a. number of the fields in the West. In a number of the cities in the West, where sev- eral years ago only S. Schools ex- isted, are now to be found flourish- ing congregations. The General Board of Missions of the Presbyterian Church in Canada also mot in the same place on March 17th to 21st. When not having to attend the meetings of the Board of S. Schools and Young Peoples’ Societies, Mr. Stavert was able to be present at the meetings of the Gen- eral Board of Missions. The reports from“ the different syiiodical missionaries and from the various other workers in the House and Foreign Mission Fields were full of inspiration and good cheer.. Dur- ing the past summer, the two hund- red Home Mission Fields had been manned with students and the work done had‘ been of a high order. Al- though the past ycar has been one of financial depression, yet the con- tributions made from these fields were greater than in all previous years. Appointments were made to all of the Home Mission Fields for the in- coming year.’ Most of the young men who have been appointed, have been young men from our own Can- adian colleges. A .few students from Westminster College, Philadelphia, Princeton College, New Jersey, New College, Edinburgh, Assembly's Col- lege, Belfast, Trinity College, Dublin, and from several other overseas eol- lcges were given appointments. Two young ladies, who are gradu- ating from the Deaconess Training Home, Toronto, this year, have vol- unteered for work in the Foreign Field and have been accepted. They will sail for their respective fields in the latter part of the summer.‘ The work of the Foreign Field is growing rapidly and every year the staff has to be increased. The growth of the Church as a whole in both the Home and the Foreign Field during the past five years has been very marked indeed. When the growth of the Presbyter- ‘iari Church in Canada, within the home fields dui"ing the past two years was compared with the growth of the United Church of Canada within the same territory, it was found that in proportion to the membership of each, that the Pres- byterian Church in Canada had grown slightly more than twice as fast as the United Church of Can- ada had. § _ i _ a e Mar] et Repo S New York The Montreal Dominion Of t Exchange Stock Exchange Canada Bonds By STEWART JONES i"? Quite a number of our congregations not having been able to secure or- dained men have had to L: content with being supplied by students, but , these fields are asking for fully qual- ified men. While quite a largc number of ministers have already come back from the United Church of Canada. and quite a few more are applying for permission to come back and, while also along with these a num- ber have, from time to time, come in from denominations other than the United Church of Canada, yet the supply has not been equal to the demand. It is cstiinated that just at present, the Presbyterian Church in Canada needs at least one hundred and twenty-five or- dained men to man all of lier va- cant congregations. Last year, the Church lost through death and the retirement of a number of the older men, as many ministers as were graduated from all of her own Can- adian colleges. The outlook for young men for the ministry from among the students in the arts courses in the several colleges is brighter than it has been for a number of years in the past. if the church were only able to sec- ure all of the fully qualified men that she needs, of the right type, to fill all of her vacancies, the work would go forward with leaps and bounds.
