Ill MEMORIAM JOHN MCKENZIE The late John K, McKenzie whose death was recently an- nounced in the columns of this pa- per was a native of Canoe Cove being born there '78 years ago, and many of his old friends at home and abroad will hear of his de- parture with tender recollections and regret. The deceased was a man of gen- ial and Winsome personality. Hoe- pitable at home and sociable abroad he had acquired during his life time a. host of friends, few of whom he ever lost. 1n his early manhood he learned the trade of shoemnklng and shortly after his apprenticeship he married Miss Isabel McKay, of De Sable, P. E. Island. For upwards of twenty years he and his family resided in his native district at Canoe Cove Corner where during the winter months he carried on his trade of shoemaking and repairing and many a fine old knee-boot came from his hands. In summer he fol- lowed the occupation of lobster canning. During all these years his home was a centre of sociability and pastime for the young people of the community and many a pleasant winter evening was spent by his fireside. Over thirty years ago he and his family moved to Charlottetown, where he secured a position on the Prince Edward Island Railway which he held till he was retired ,-_. awe’ - .._ Aa-saaa-luaaslmabnhannmioii-aaalxaudlumarslnliflmml . . During hi residence in the city he was a loyal member of the Caledonia Club to which he was ‘piper and for the music of the dzagpipes he held an affectionate ind romantic interest, being de- scended on his grandmother's side of'the family from a long line 0i noted pipers in Scotland. Mr. Mc- Kenzie was also one of a now fast diminishing number of Highland descent in Prince Edward Island who still possess a goodly know- ledge of the Gaelic language. In this his native tongue, he was up to the time of his death a good speaker, reader and singer. The deceased was a. kind and loving father to a large family, four of whom, three sons and one daughter, predeceased him many years ago. His wife also passed away some years before his death. During his last days his character was marked by a serene Christian faith and assurance that he was going home to join loved ones gone before, His surviving family consists of three sons and five daughters and are as follows: John, Albert and Norman of Charlotte- town, Mrs, Jesie Morrison and Mrs. Fanny McDonald, also of Charlottetown; Mrs.‘ Sarah Newell, of Halifax, N. 5.; Mrs. Katherine Herbert or Winnipeg, Man; and Mrs. Margaret Rash, of St. Louis, U.
