     CORMORANTS - MALIGNED OR NOT? 
     
    
   
   
    
       
     
    
   
   
    
     The past decade has seen a continued increase in the Double- 
     
     Crested and Great Cormorant populations in the Maritimes. Some trout 
     
     fisherman on the Island have raised concerns that the Double-Crested 
     
     Cormorant, which feeds in fresh as well as salt water, is feeding on 
     
     trout. A number of studies in other areas of the Maritimes and 
     
     elsewhere have shown that neither species feeds to any extent on 
     
     trout or salmon. Our next issue will feature an article by Geoff 
     
     Hogan describing the recent population trends and details on the 
     
     feeding habits of both species.
