a public interest. A wooden country
is always sublect to conflagrstlons
and the destruction wrought by these
has wiped out vast quantities of
material out of which history could
have been woven. ,
To avoid such loss in the luturo a
splendid fire proof building has been
erected at Ottawa to store and pre-
serve our early' records. It .is a ph-
trlotic duty that public institutions
and families possessing records that
east a light on old times owe to
their country to place 'those records
where they will be safe and available
for students and historians. There
are many instances when collectors of
documents connected with the past
have hoarded them year after year
only to have them destroyed or
scattered and the future deprived of
the inspiration they contain.

lishment of the Archives in its pre-
sent efficient condition ie largely
owing, appeals to all who 9088688 01'

acter to place it on the shelves of
the Archives and thus guarantee ite

In the course of a week or two,
perhaps a day or two, the Macedon-
ian cry from the west will again be
heard in our land, the cell for help
in the hnvesi. iielda. The usunl excur-
sions and excursion rates will be giv-
en, the usual inducements offered and
thorn will, doubtless, be the usual re-
sponse-some hundreds will go, if
there are so many left to go.
Many hundreds have gone to the
west in recent years, on these annual
harvest excursions. Some have re-
turned, others would hsve returned if
they had the means, and some have
settled there and made good. The
proportion of the latter, of those who
have done even as well as they could
have done at home, is very small in
comparison with those who had occa-
sion to wish they had never seen the
west.
This may look like eastern preju-
dice. It is not, nor is it in any way de-
papers and his fellow Islanders are
proud to record his success. There is
nothing said of those who have fail-
ed. of those who broke down under
tue unaccustomed hardships and who
returned either in cofflns or as inva-
lids to die at home; nothing said of
those who were unable to procure em-
ployment uf any kind or who slaved
at. odd jobs which they would dis-`
dain to accept nt home and would he
ashamed to have their friends know
about. This is no dream. These
things have happened, and to Prince
Edward Islanders who took advan-
tage of the cheap excursion rates of-
fered, not by the farmers gf the west.
but by the railways. Q
The experiences of the past. few
years should be 8, warning to those
who are looking forward ,to the an-
nual harvest excursions. It will he
remembered that hundreds of young
men from the east spent weeks -look-
ing for employment on farms. were
pi-eelatory of the west. Western (lan-
iudn is a land of great possibilities
and great opportunities; it were folly
.to say otherwise. But it must not
he supposed that wealth is to be
nicked up without etlort, that the
opportunities will open of`tliemsc1ves
to all \vho knock or that all succeed
who go to the west.
In the matter of possibilities und
opportunitlhs, generally speaking, the
west has nothing better to oder than
Prince Edward Island has, and there
are 5 hundred chances for absolute
faiiun- in the west to one such chance
in Prince Edward Island.
It will he remembered that every
"successful Islander abroad" is heard
