The Cadre, Oct. J4, ]975, page 6 North Americans Is there any reason for .us to be uptight about the society in which we live? What difference does it make to a university stud- ent as to what is happeni- ng in the world? Let's face it, aren't we all here in knowledge college for our degree- that small white piece of paper, thnd then go out into the job market and sell our spec- ialized field of interest to whoever will take us? Aren't we in school to ab- sorb knowledge like a spo- nge soaks up water only to be squeezed or utilized when it is needed? Come on brothers and sisters, let's stopkidding ourselves! Let's ask ourselves some basic questionsltahat are we really doing in school? Why do we need a universi- ty? Do we have to go to school to prove to our se- lves and our parents that we are intelligent? The questions I pose to all of you who are here for the degree and the supposed canadian or american dream which comes afterwards are as follows. Is what you are 7 learning in university helping you to more clear— ly understand the problems H ave . To of [on 9 Sat. V” of the day? Is your colle- ge education preparing you to practically and concret— ely translate this knowle— dge you are gaining so that you can make the world a better place to live in? Is your education helping you to know yourself? Have you learned to accept your— self for what you are? Have you learned to think clea— rly, critically, and rati— onally? If any of you read the Cadre last week, there was an article on the Canadian Bishops Labor Day Message. In my mind, this article has to beone of the most of ours. We’re Northern Electric, and if you’ve been assessing the Canadian business scene with an eye to pin- pointing your first career move, you may already know quite a bit about us. Growth that’s been called almost explosive. Tele- communications product development that’s been termed fantastic. ' We are on the move and to maintain this momentum, we need more talented people. ; You see, as big and l booming as we are, we if L" «‘3 a1 L“, w e; A.- we aiv If you’ve spent the last few years learning the business of money management, we’d like to talk to you about managing some know we’ve hardly touched the surface. There’s a whole world waiting for better means of communication. South lies the giant American market; East, the chal- lenging European Common Market and West, a Pacific Rim potential so big we can’t even measure it. We’ve - already established ef- fective bases in these markets, but to be as big a part of them as we want to be, requires sound financial planning. 1 So we need people— Nor/bem [let/fie COMPANY, LIMITED var 'AvrvaMhl «a...» N technology. ambitious and enthusias- - tic finance and accounting graduates who can be as creative with money as our engineers are with telecommunications Of course, our standards are high. I seriously thinkthat it's about time that we as students and North Americ- ans take a critical look at the worldin which we live and the harsh realit— ies that we virtuallyxtend, to ignore. Let's take some time out for a minute and see what's happening in the world. 1) There is economic, po- litical, and social injus— tices existing in the wor— ld at every level of soci— ety. ‘ 2) There is a fantastic, amount of violence in our cities as well as legitim- ized violence which can be seen on T.V. in the form of Cannon, PoliceStory, the Rookies, Hockey and Footb- all, etc. , 3) There is abortion, in- sanity, suicide, population explosion, insecurity, inf- eriority, pollution, greed, racism, exploitation, mercy killing, neglect of old p— eople;_alienation_from-C§g, work..- land ,7 13nd - memes... each other;lack"of,cornmun—,I ication, openness, sincerem ity; various physical dis; eases that are related to smoking, drinking, chemic- alized foods, and lack of physical‘fitness. 4) There is crime, rape, ,mgrders, divorce, child ab- use, unemployment, inflat- ion, capital punishment, poverty, malnourishment, and starvation. 5) There are undeclared wars in Northern Ireland, the Middle East, and vari— ous portions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
