Were the anathemas which our citizens utter daily while passing this sink of pollution published, we think our city father’s would be awakened from their lethargy. vita Stvart Roerxs—the leading reciter and impersonator of America—who delighted a Charlottetown audience a few years ago, will give several of his inimitable entertainments in this city about the middle of September. Among the special features this season are his representations of Right Hon. W. E. Gilad- stone, Sam Jones, the noted revivalist, and others. The Lyceum (formerly the Benevolent Irish Society Hall) has been engaged for the occasion. _——_ <>——— Jr is absolutely mournful to notice how full of strangers the city has been ever since the election. We know a man who six weeks ago eouldu’t walk across the street without stop- ing to shake hands with fifty-five men whom & had known ever since they were boys, who now walks from his home to the post office, a distance of half a mile, and never takes his hands out of his pockets the whole distance. (His candidates were left by some hundreds of a minority. ) : an ‘THE UNKINDEST ccT oF ALL.—Last night's Patriot contains an advertisement from Geo. £. Full, a supporter of the Liberal party, the opening paragraph of which reads : **Never before in the history of this Island have the rices of all kinds of Staple Goods been so low as they are now.” The quotation is printed in Italics in order that it may not be misunderstood. Coming, as this assurance does, while the Grit Editors are howling them- selves hoarse with their ruin and destruction ery and their false teaching that consumers are compelled under the N. P. to pay ex- travayant prices, it rust be gall and worm- wood for our contemporary. Even the Patrio’ « friends condemn its utterances. onsen Paixce County has long led the van of well bred horses. At first the people raised well bred horses because they took pride and pleasure in it; of late years they have dis- covered that ‘‘there’s money in it” as well. Mr. B. L. The steamer City of St. John with the Lunenburg con- tingent and a great many from Yarmouth, arrived at 8 o'clock. The morning broke in gloriously and the day has been exceeding- ly hot. Old Halifax has donned its holiday attire and streets are handsomely decorated with flags, etc. The streets have been crowded with the youth and beauty of the sever l the city all morning, and windows and doorways all along the line of march are crowded with © sight seers. The procession started at about Ll o'clock and a presented novel scene such as was never before witnessed in During the march the firemen Canada. were elh- thusiastically cheered at various points where great masses of people had cougre- gated. The decorations were of the most gorgeous description, and while Halifax and Dartmouth, of course, carried off the palm, the Charlottetown and Yarmouth boys showed up splendidly. The route of the procession covered about eight miles, and will terminate at the exhibition building, where one thousand tiremen will dine. Thousands of visitors are constantly arriving by exeur- sion trains. THE RIOTING IN BELFAST. A GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION ainful Scenes and incidents. Bextrasr, Aug. 10. This city, owing to the wreck and ruin of many of its houses, presents a deplorable aspect similar to that of Paris after the reign of the commune. It is feared that numerous deaths, result- ing from the riots, have taken place which will never be reported or heard of. The hospitals are taxed to their utmost to ac- commodate the wounded in need of prompt medical attendance. A painful feature of the riots is the num- ber of children wounded on Sunday. One boy was shot whilst returning from Sunday school. Yesterday a little gir] was shot on the streets and is thought‘to be fatally wounded. ' Train loads of troops are constantly ar- riving. The military, early yesterday morning, dispersed several mobs at the point of the bayonet. The prospect of af- fairs was so threatening at noon yesterday that the authorities ordered all taverns in the city to be closed. Last evening groups of men were assembled everywhere excited- ly discussing the situation. The heaviest fighting was done at Spring- field, from which place a regular guerilla battle is reported, in which sixty of the rioters were shot down dead. — Hanlan to the Front Again. Bostoy, Aug. 10. In the 3 mile scull race at Nantasket yesterday, between Hanlan, Mackay, Ten Eyck and Hosmer, Hanlan won; Mac- kay second, Een Eyck third, and Hosmer fourth. Hosmer met with an accident to his shell. The time of the race was 21 minutes 5 seconds. More Honors for * GurB oys.” Montreat, Aug. 10.
