For example, learning how to program covsputer or do proofs in plane « -vetry is said to progress three ux jour times as fast with a private tvtor as in a conventional class- p2om because the tutor can pro- vide immediate feedback and cor- rection whenever the. learner segins a wrong line of reasoning, thus shortcutting the novice’s wasted efforts.” Bootzen, R.R., et al, Psychology Today: An introduction, N.Y. Random House, 1986, p. 208. Two senior psychology students have applied for a government grant to tutor students during the summer and Professor Sharkey is coordinating their work. The aim is to apply information from problem solving, thinking; and cognition in pshychology to real academic problems of students. The students need not be taking courses but they should be avail- able for one, two, or more tutor- ing sessions per week at the Uni- versity or in Summerside. The areas could be English, Math, Psychology, Statistics, Experi- March 27, 1986 mental Psychology, French, possibly computers or some other area where principles of problem solving and good study techniques apply. It would be ideal to find students who were very interested in improving their academic ability.and were willing to work at it several times a week for a month to three or four months. However help would be given as the student sees fit. Depending on the case, it mizh: be a good idea to bring in sam>ies of work, tests, or assisgnments and even a transcript und discuss results and strategies for improve- ment. A vocabulary or simple pro- blem solving test might help. Handouts on techniques of study, organization of study time, and on psychological principles in- volved in efficient study might be useful. Information given on the tutoring form would help. Forms and information are available from the secretary of the psychology department (Tele- phone: 566-0563) or from Pro- fessor Sharkey’s office, 05 Memo- rial, Telephone 566-0617.
