erucks tog" sin-on THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 1976 This week I've listed my favorite albums of 1976. Singling out 10 from the great music released last year was.a difficult job, but here they are. 1. Helluva Band...Angel 2.Night Shift...Foghat 3.A New World Record..Elo 4.A Night at The 0pera.Queen 5.Free For All..Ted Nugent 6. Max Webster..Max Webster 7.Agents of Fortune..BOC 8. Crystal Ball..Styx 9. Presence..Led Zeppelin 10.Rocks..Aerosmith (* * *) FOREVER FOR NOW— APRIL WINE (AQUARIUS RECORRS) Why, at this point in “ their career, would April Wine want to put out an album consisting almost entirely of soft, melodic love ballads when their previous album, "The Whole World's Going Crazy", was establishing them as a viable rock'n roll band throughout North America? The title cut, "Forever For Now"; is the only rocker, but it has to be admitted that the remaining bal- lads grow on you, including "Hard Times", which features new lyrics to Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John". The best song on the album is "Child's Garden". with soft- flowing verses and a chunky chorus. This tune is offset by worst song April Wine has ever recorded, "Holly Would". Dominated by a misplaced organ, it is a totally useless track. If you like April Wine preforming soft material, for you this is their best yet. If you like the rock 'n .roll Wine, this is one of their worst yet. I leave the decision up to you, forewarned! ( * * * *) MADE IN EUROPE‘-DEEP PURPLE (WARNER BROS: RECORDS) Recorded during their Stormbringer tour in Europe, this second live album from Deep Purple is as good as "MadeIn Japan", the previous one. Each band member is spot- lighted at one point or other during the five long but never boring songs. "Burn" and "Mis— treated" are my favorites from what is likely the last album from Deep Purple. "Made In Europe" is a test— ament to how great' this band actually was. (* * *) PLAY"N" THE GAME —NAZARETH (A & M RECORDS) This simply is a solid rock album from Nazareth, featuring nothing particularly new and everything vaguely familiar. "Waiting For .The Man" is similar in parts to "Telegram", "I Don't Want To Go On Without You" is a slight variation of _"Love Hurts", and "L.A. Girls" is a fast version of a typical Beach Boys song. I ., r” 4.} .. c. ,v Iggmuw‘MWV w . 1% can't see this record *making Nazareth any new fans. . (* * * * *) NIGHT SHIFT- FOGHAT (BEARSVILL RECORDS) Foghat is TEE rock n roll boogie beast band of all time. They have proven this with their first five albums and now they claim the crown for '77 and will never give it up. Songs Like "Driven Wheel" (their latest hit single) and "Don't run Me Down" sound like two high—powered trains on head on collision courses. After their final crash comes "Burning The Midnight Oil" and then all of side two! As you can see from my Top 10, this is my number two album for 1976. Don't miss it. Foghat will break open bigger than ever in 1977.‘ (* *) ROCK AND ROLL OVER-KISS (CASABLANCA RECORDS) This album was almost a total write—off, until the song "Hard Luck Woman" made it's ap- pearance. This is probably the only song I've heard that sounds as much like Rod Stewart as Rod Stewart himself. It is also the latest single from the band (?) and gives me the feeling that Kiss are no longer going to re— lease hard rock singles. With the success of "Beth" from "Destroyer" a song that was un- believably bad, Kiss have decided to sacrifice a , couple of songs per album to fit into the AM radio scheme. With " Hard . x I THouecALu {ITherfladrégiJfinhary.13,197ff’page'7. picksuwinne‘rs of ’767 Luck Woman: they will have a deserved AM hit, but this album as a whole ‘ doesn't deserve your time. It should go a long way in making Kiss an extinct animal. After all, Kiss' music is simply dinosaur farts anyway. If you want to hEar the music reviewed in Tracks '77 listen in (to the show of the same name with yours truly on CIMN Monday nights from 7-9 PM. NEXT WEEK: HOTEL CAL_ IFORNIA—EAGLES; WINGS OVER AMERICA - WINGS; CRYSTAL BALL- STYX; and OTHERS.v Senate Report (continued from page 3) allowed, Inc. or did not write any nu— merical mark.
