It is s curious fact of history that every turning-point on the way to the civilisation 'wr may today is marked by a great war. It is per- haps a more curious fact that each of these wars, with all its attendant horror. its sin. its misery, its blood- shed, its inhuman cruelty, has given a direct impetus to civilization, has opened the closed doors to Christian- ity. It is not too much to say that without war, civilization would have stagnated centuries and centuries ago, that doors long since opened to the gospel would havc remained closed. by which civilization is to 'be at- tained? The key by which the dark places of the earth are to be opened to the gospel? It is, but only as thc surgeon's knife is a means by which health may be restored, by which life may be prolonged. It is the surgical operation by which civil- ization is occasionally freed firom some of its deadly diseases. We stand awe-stricken in the hos- pital ward as some near and dear one passes through a critical opera- tion. The danger over, we rejoice at the promise of health and, while de. ploring the need of such a cruel oper- ation, We honor the art that made it possible. We do not forget that, without the disease, the operation and the suffering would have been un- necessary and henceforward our energies will bc directed towards What then is war? The means by` THE CRUELTY OF WAR. _ avoiding disease rather than under- going operations. We stand agbast st the horror and ,the cruelty of war and we repeat, occasionally and revorsntly, Gen- eral Sher-man's saying that "War is Hell." But we must not forget that ,the real "hell" is the evil that makes war possible and that our energies should be directed rather towards overcoming those evils than fitting ourselves for the operation that must inevitably follow if the evils are not removed. Political cor- ruption is one of the evils which make for war to-day. It was politi- cal corruption in England that forc- ed on the American war of Indepen- dence. Georgs the Third took a lea( out of Walpols's note book and bought up azsubservient parliament to do his stupid, blind and stubborn bidding with the result that the Am- erican colonies were lost to England. Grasping monopolies and the forces which help to make them are other `evils that are pressing and that in the end make for war. It is true, the war may be a long way oil, that the diseases may linger long bo- fore the alternatives of an operation or death are confronted, but diseases unchecked tend towards one or the other of these alternatives. Let us then emphasise the need of healing our diseases rather than hav- ing our eyes iixed upon the opera- tion. Let us emphasize the horror and the sin and the cruelty of war» rather than the glory of it. PARTY POLITICS. On many questions of administra- tion and of government there is room and healthful exercise for dif- ferent opinions. There are two sides to almost every question, and to ar- hoth sides. » -This furnishes a reason for the ex- istence of two political parties. It furnishes no reason, however, for that idea which forms the distinguishing characteristic of the political parties of today, namely, that every act of the other party must bc opposed. The curse of the party political system as wc have it both in federal fend provincial affairs today is that rive at a reasonably correct conclu- .l¢"°l°'5‘ 0P*i°i“° I sion it is necessary to view it from r. ` the outstanding policy of each is to Long Service I ,and satisfaction are assured ¢ _-vi ifyou purcliiiase l.nivea, forks, ,_-'_ spoons an serving pieces 2, _ I /, ‘r baring the trade mark `l f _ Mroeiiisiios. ii) A This brand is known as / "»i`|'lvsr Plate that Wears” " `, and is made lu the heaviest ` , _l grade of plate. It is true that there are statesman in each party who can rise above this politi- cal littleness but, unfortunately, the ship is not wholly manned nor oven ofilcered by statesmcn, and thc course is usually steered not in the interests of the owners but of the officers and crew. In our own little province the cer- tainty with which one party will oppose any measure introduced by the other is proverbial. It is safe to assume ln almost every case that any hill, introduced by the party in pow- No ».er, however advantageous its provi- _ ln this space during 13 consecu- tive weelrs will appear an "iid" of one of the I3 Retail Stores that specialize in Cameron’s llome- Made Bread For the coming week we write (N0 2) .l0llN CAMERON - (Elm Avenue) General grocer-As long as lhe "oldest inhabitant" can remember “Cameron's Grocery" has been a feature of this street. There should be» at best some common standing groundpisome space upon which both parties could agree. When the interests of the province are at stake, when the condition of the province necessitates the adop- tion of a certain course, surely that should be sufllcient justification for either party to throw in its lot with the other. Our past political history does not justify the hope* that this shall come to pass. The 'rule hither- to has been “I'rnr agln it" if it ema- nates from the opposite party. Are we able to overcommthis wastg- ful, this destructive party' spirit? In this little community of opts there is room not for n third political party, which would mean only more opposi- tion-hut for a non-political league of level headed, patriotic men, band- ,cd together to promote the welfare of the country, regardless of party, to boost the province and to frown down little partyism wherever it would show itself. Such a league is possible and it could be made up of men sufficiently strong to exert an in- fluence that would be felt both in our dominion and our provincial politics. NOTES. ‘ A VBl`i¢8bl¢ flood of letters, from MBC?-lcally all over the province, came into the Guardian office yester- dlllf. after the first une, that of F.T. McRae, which appeared yesterday, had been set up. It would be impos- sible for us to publish them all and unfair to publish a few. The gist of the letters is the same, commenda- tion of Professor Ross and 5, demand that his services be retained at any reasonable cost. The letters are all from representative férmers whose names a`re'~` prominent in exhibition and Seed Fair prize lists and at In- stitute meetlngs. That they voice the opinions of the great majority, if not indeed all our farmers, we have not any doubt.
