(Comtinued from first page.) @ducation to a Province sueh as this ; but beyond that he has no connected ideas whatever. He is very liberal with his cen- sure, and indulges largely in safe general ities, but evideutly he has not given the subject sufficient thought to have anything to say concerning it. He seems to labor under the impression that the object of public schools is to teach trades; and that, since agriculture is the most important trade, it shou'd have the first place in the schvols. But the object of our schools is not to teach trades; and Mr. Dewar should be aware of the fact lt is true that some knowledge of agricultural chemistry may be imparted in our public schools. Mr. Dewar is somewhat late, however, in call- ing the attention of the ‘‘ proper authori ties” to this. Their attention, has been directed to it for some time, and the blame in teaching agricultural for any neglect chemistry does not rest with them. They have placed agricultural chemistry on the course of studies; they have prescribed a suitable text book, and they enqourage its teaching by every means in their power. If they attempted to do more they would pro- bably succeed in doing The chiet reason why the tesching ot agricultural chemistry is neglected in our schools 1s that the farmers themselves do not sufliciently recognize that it is a good thing. But, Mr. Editor, 1 shall with your permission return to this subject, and then 1 shall have something to say on what our schools should teach, and shall explain more fu'ly than I have done why agricultural chemis- less. try is neglected. C. —— a Christmas Tree. Ir was a pleasant sight which greeted the | view of the writer as he entered the New Glasg »w Road schoolhouse on the night of the 24th December. Upon seats, raised one above sat the pupils of the school—some in number—whose sunny faces another were i turned toward ‘the generous Christmas| JAMZS tree,” which stood inthe opposite corner. | {t wasa graceful tree, brilliantly lighted | with wax candies, and its boughs Jadea |} with a vast number of beautiful and usoful | presents for the children. A Sehoul Exhibition, consisting of sing- | ing, readings and recitations, was given by the pupils. At the close of the entertain- ment it was announced that Santa Claus would shortly make his appearance and distribute the presents. All eyes were im- mediately fixed upon the dvor. minutes he appeared dressed in a very fan- tastic costume. Those of us who were be- yianing to think thas St. Nicholas is grow- ing old and feeble were agreeably disap- pointed. On this oceasion he was par- ticularly frisky: and the way in which he sent the presents up to the children casioned considerab’e anxiety among his | assistants for the saiety of the breakable | articles. A pleasant feature in the dis- | tribution of presents was that the children | who had least prospect of receiving presents were the ones who received the greatest nunrber—a fact which speaks well for the kind-heartedness of the people. The teacher of the school, Mr. J. M. Campbeil, | received from his pupils a beautiful gift—a | silent and yet very expressive indication of | the kindly feeling existing betweea pupils | and teacher. At length all was over, Santa withdrew | happy in the possession of ar elegant whip | which was presented to him in order that | he might the more easily make up lost | time. The little ones were taken in charge | by their parents, and bundled off home to | dream it all over again. j EBENEZER.
