The bode of Jefferson Davis which ar- rived at Richmond from Louisiana on Wednesday last, was again consigned to the grave that afternoon. From daylight until 9 o'clock, hundreds of strangers and city people passed through the capitol and viewed the flower-laden casket. From 9 toll o'clock about 5,000 public sckool children passed by the bier, each dropping flowers as @ tribate of affection. At 340 v'clock the body was removed to the gaisson drawn by six white horses capar- isoned in black, and the line of march was teken up fer Hollywood. Houses along the line were almost with- out exception draped in black, and the national, state and confederaie flags, the latter predominating, were either floating to the breeze or worked in the funeral colors, The streets along the route, yards, and windows of the dwellings were packed with people. Nothing of a tumultous and noisy character marked the day or progress of the cortege, while the scene was a most imposing one though the whole city seemed to be in mourning. On arriving at Holly- wood cemetery the distinguished guests, the Louisiana escort, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and also the Georgia delegations, which came on with the funeral cortege, descended from their carriages and formed on the circle which contains the graves. The infantry formed the outer circle, and be- tween the two marched the Confederate veterans. When the military movement was completed, the coffin, the open grave, and the family were surrounded by three solid walls of men. Outside this triple circle was a dense crowd of thousands. As soon as everything was in readiness the Stonewall band of Staunton played a funeral dirge. Rev. Mr. Mumford then read a selection of Scripture. Rev. Dr. W. W. Landrum then read the hymn, “How Firm a Foundation,” which was sung by the crowd. At the close of the hymn Dr. Hoge offered prayer. Rey. Dr. Barton, of Norfolk, pronounced the bene- diction. Immediarely after the benediction the casket was lowered into the grave. After the bugle signal came taps, and the infantry fired a salute which announced that the services were over. The column then moved to Gettysburg hill where the andual memorial services of the Ladies’ Hol'ywood Association teok place, which consisted of the graves of 6,000 Confederate soldiers. Bruuiarps.—A London des lst June says: The billia match was resumed at Humphrey's hall, Knight's Bridge, between Ives and Roberts to-day before a large and enthusiastic audience. Great excitement and interest was manifested on account of the marvelleus change for the better in the American’s play Ives took possession of the table, and amid intense excitement he compiled an unfinished break af 1,549 points. At the close of this evening’s play the scores stood : Ives, 4,001; Roberts, 3,484. At the conclusion of the play the English champion weakened ard offered to give Ives the game and play him another game of 2,000 points up, level, for 500 ster- lings a side, but the offer was declined by Ives. Orrawa, June 2.—Mr. King, the Alaska boundary commissioner, returned from Northern British Celumbia to-day, after seeing kis seven parties started on their surveying tour. None of the remain in Alaska during the winter, but return here to write up reports. Mr. King will shortly leave for Passamaquoddy Bay, where he and Mr. Mendenhall, his commissioner, will at once proceed to mark the boundary in that vicinity. As is well known that boundary is there defined by treaty. When two commissioners are agreed as to its precise location iu willbe marked in the water by buoys, and on the land by monu- ments or posts. = tch of the SHaNnecHal, June Come and see them. Unless the amendment) were adopted there would be nothing to| prevent the Irish Legislature from forming | an army of ite own under pretence of re-) organizing and developing this constabu- r 'y: Mr. Gladstone said he was satisfied that no semi-military force under the name of police could be legaliy constituted in Ireland | under the bill. Somewhat later Mr. Morley accepted for the Government an amendment excepting from the control of the Irish Government the magazines, arsenals, naval dockyards ore other similar means of defence of the m. A Hard Professien. Old Dr. Johnson once said, addressing of medicine was a most arduous undertak- ing; that the most comprehensive mind aud the most industrious student could scarcely do more than explorethe portals to medical knowledge during the brief time allotted to study before commencing practice, but that throughout hie whole life the responsibilities of his profession should rest upon him like a nightmare. He should explore every avenue of natural knowledge, must become familiar with chemistry, natural philosophy aod natural history, but, above all, he must learn the construction of his own frame, the means by which he lives, moves and has his being. He must understand the nature of all those influences by which health is broken down and _re- stored, and by what means disease, suffering and death may be averted. Dr. Johason further says that nothing con- tributes so much to the support of quackery as the present ineufficiency of medical knowledge. Men do not, he says, easily abandon hope but as readily put faith in ignorant pretenders as drowning men catch at straws. ‘The good that men do in this life lives after them.” During the life time of old Dr. Johnson he invented what is known as John- son’s Anodyne Liniment, 4 standard family remedy of surpassing merit, This liniment is both for internal and external use and it is safe to say that no single remedy ever dis- covered has done so much good as has this one. It is inexpensive, ready at a moments notice night or day and may be used with absolute confidence in the thousand and one ailments that afflict humanity. In the cure of severe cramps or pains in the stomach or bowels, dysentry, diarrbcea it is certainly worth its weight in gold. It has been known to cure cases from ten to fifteen years stand. ing after the sufferers had been given up. jo5 dy 6wk 1m _ ——>- <> The London Economist discusses the depression of rural labor in England. It says ‘‘the depopulation of therural districts, which is deplored so loudly by sentimental politicians, has, in fact, been the salvation of the remaining laborers, and has en- abled them, in spite of bad years and low prices, to improve their condition and to claim a larger share in the profits of agri- culture.” Considerable indignation is manifested at Ottawa on account of the action of the Michigan Board of Health in sending two agents to Gross Isle quarantine and sub- and interfering with Canadian work, They have had the impudence to demand from the Grand Trunk and Cana- dian Pacific railways salaries ot a hundred dollers per month, which the companies a class of medical students, that the study | instal SKODA DISCOVERY CO., WOLFVILLE, N.S, For sale by el' Druggists.
