The history oi privm-B D5?-C5'-Z Un' terprise is s. branch of literature which appears to have been decidedly neglected. Perhaps this is because it has been considered that Some of the, _ secrets of the bank parlor, which re- quire to be preserved with such scru- I pulous care, might possibly be dis- closed. On the other hand, in view of tho bool; amalgamations which are constantly in progress, and of -which the latest example is found in the combination between the Union oi London and Smiths and the group of enterprises, which`for con- venience sake, are known as Pres- cott's. it seems almost a pity that each banking house has not been compelled to keep a chronicle oi the leading incidents in its career. Old and famous nrms are being absorbed. and their identity runs some risk at. least of being obscured by the pro- cess. In a few cases, happily, an at- tempt has been made to place on permanent record the story of old- established private banks. There is Bristol Old Bank, for instance. one of the few commercial enterprises oi the kind founded before the Bank ot England was created. Thiefwas one of the undertakings amalgamated with Prescott's in 1891. and now in- cluded in the larger combination al- ready mentioned. There is an inter- esting account of this and other Bristol bn£ in an elaborate volume. entitled " History of Banking hi Bristol," by Mr. Charles H. Cavs, whose pen covers the period from 1750 to 1390. ~ An odd thing about the Union Bank of London is that, while it has number of the older banks, including that of Messrs. Smith, Payne, and Smiths. which was originally estab- lshcd at Nottingham as lar back as 1868, it is of itsel! of relatively mod- ern origin. Its prospectus was issued in January, 1839, at which time. it appears, there were only three joint stock banks in the monetnrywcapital of the world, The ba.nk'Scems to have been largely of Scottish origin. It originally began business at P 8 Moorgate street, but in 1845 remov- ed to its present premises, 2 Princes street. The nominal capital of the undertaking at the time if- Was crc- A ated was £3,000,000. The recentl! announced amalgamation will bring the amount up to £25,000,000. It is only of into that the Union Bank has acquiesced in a policy of combi- nation, _ PI'escott's Bank was nrst establish- ed in Threadneedle street in 1776, under the style of Prescott, Grote 6: Co. As his brothers business in Nottingham wus KYOWUIK in importance, a London bank was resolved upon-truly a unique experi- ment for o, provincial tlrm. It carried on business at various places, event- ually in Lombard street, and finally and for long years close against the Mansion House. ~ In the “thirtles”,this bank kept the accounts of some oi the biggest nrms in the city, and it apparently also had the patronage oi publish- ers, for gore is a record oi a cheque dre. bv Messrs. Longmans, Green & Co. for £10,000 in favor oi Lord Macaulay fur his "History of England." A couple ot other inter- esting cheques were those drawnby Sir H. M. Stanley in Central Africa, for which he received payment from Arab traders, and, oddly enough. one ofthe cheques was paid through _the Union Bank oi London, with which Messrs. Smith. Payne &= Smiths were ultimately to be idontliied- ` It is worth observing that while the process of amalgamation neces- sarily msans to some extent the ovexshadewing of famous names, yet the conditions which have been ob- served by the Unisn~Ba.nk‘and its copartners, ii the term may be per- mitted, are calculated in no lnconsid- erabla degree to keep them alive.
