14 The Panther Prints MUSIC FACULTY IN RECITAL Members of the UPEI Department of Music Faculty will be featured in recital this Friday night, March 8 at 8:00 pm in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. This is the fourth annual recital which displays most of the music faculty in solo performances. March 5, 1996 44 Attention Poets The National Library of Poetry has announced that $24,000 in prizes will be awarded this year to over 250 poets in the North American Open Poetry Contest. The deadline for the contest is March 31,1996. The contest open to everyone and entry is FREE. Dr. Frances Gray will be carrying a great deal of the workload on Friday evening as she is accompanying four of her colleagues in their solo repertoire in addition to solo piano music of her own. Her solo feature of works by Issac Albéniz will be among the highlights of the recital. Baritone Carl Mathis, Flautist Betty- Anne Younker, Clarinetists Ruth Simon and Karem Simon, Percussionist Dave Sheppard, and Tubist Gregory (the Great) Irvine will be performing as well. Any poet, whether previously published or not, can be a winner. Every poem entered also has a chance to be published in a deluxe, hardbound anthology. To enter, send ONE original poem, any subject and any style, to The National Library of Poetry 11419 Cronridge Dr., P.O. Box 704-1943, Owings Mills, MD 21117. The poe should be no more than 20 lines, and the poet’s name an address should appear on the top of the page. Entries Together with pianist Frances McBurnie, Carl Mathis will perform lieder of Johannes Brahms. Betty-Anne Younker will perform Bach's Flute Sonata in B minor. Ms. Younker was recently featured at the University of New Brunswick ina recital of music for flute and guitar. Dr. Simon will perform a Bucolique by Bozza (the clown) and will collaborate with his wife, Ruth, and Dr. Gray in a rendition of Mendelssohn's Concert Piece, Op. 14, No. 2. At the time of this writing, it was not known what Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Irvine were performing but expect marimba magic from Dave and do not expect to hear the Theme from Cannon or the Theme from A&W from Greg. Tickets for the concert may be purchased at the door. All funds will be donated to the music department's Green Room Fund.
