CLERGYMAN ‘A8-COMBATANT.-
Rev. A. E. Andrew, rector of Pictou,
and rural dean of Amhersf, one of
the best known of the younger church
oi’ England clergyman in the maritime
provinces, has volunteered for over-
seas service and .ls now in Halifax
taking a course in heavy gunnery_
Rev. Mr. Andrew is a Prince Edward
Islander and has many friends in his
native province who will congratulate
him on the pluck he is displaying in
this matter.
FUNERAL SERVICES- The fun-
eral of the late Mr. Cephas Twelsdy,
Vernon River, which took place on
Wednesday September 13th was very
largeily attended. The service was
held' in the Methodist Church of which
member. Rev. Mr. Gould was assist
ed in the service by Rev. H. A.
Brown, a former pastor, and Rev. E,
S. Weeks, of Pownal. Mr. Gould paid
a. tribute to the genuine worth of Mr.
Tweedy to the church and the com-
munity.
A deplorable drowning accident oc-
curred at Murray Harbor North about
11 o'cIock Thursday night, the victim
being Gavin McLure, aged 46, tailor of
that place. Mr. McLure was on his
way home from the Exhibition. He
got off the train at Murray Harbor
station, and left for Murray Harbor
North in the gasoline ferry boat oper
ated by Mr. Reynolds. On nearing
the dock Mr. McLure was holding a
lantern in the bow of the boat. Mr.
Reynolds heard a splash, and saw that
Mr. McLure had disappeared. His
body was discovered five minutes lat
er, but life was extinct. It is thought
that he took an attack of heart trou-
bio which caused him to fall over-
board. _
He' made no attempt to catch the
lines thrown to him and it is thou'ght
he was dead when he struck the wat-
er.
He was n widower, and leaves a soul
and daughter. '
-WEDDING BELLS.-Avery pret-
ty wedding took place on Tuesday
morning, at Tigiilsh church, when
Miss Susie Hackette, Sea Cow
Pond, and Mr. Joseph Morrissey, Tig-
nish, were united in the holy bonds
of matrimony, Rev. A_. J. McDougald
officiating. The bride was charmingly
attired in her "going away suit" of
_ blue velvet, and wore a hat to match.
Sho was. attended hy her friend, Miss
Beatrice McCarthy. who also wore
blue and a large black picture hat.

ward Hackette, brother of the bride/1
at the Bellevue Hotel, served by Mrs.
J. A. Hackctto, cousin of the bride, the
happy couple left on the 6 a.m. train
friends. While in Boston she will be
the guest of Mrs. Charles O'Connor.
who is a sister of the bride. Upon
their return the happy couple will re-
side in Tignish. Prior to her marriage
her sister members of the Ladies'
Auxiliary, Div. 3, and the brother
members ofthe same Society, A. 0. H.1

A meeting of the Directors of the
Farmers' Central Institute was hold
yesterday at 10 a. m. The full Board
of Directors was present and with
them several others interested in ln-
stitute work. Dr. P. C. Gauthier oc-
cupied the chair. The meeting was
addressed by the chairman. Messrs.
James Simpson, Edgar Geddlngs. E.
B. McLaren, William McGregor, J. A.
Clark, Prof. W. It. Reek and others.
After a general discussion a forward
movement Committee of five was. ap-
pointed to work in conjunction with
the Prince Edward island Develop-
ment Commission. The members oi’
the Committee are as follows: Messrs
Wm. McGregor, Dr. Gauthier, James
Simpson, E. B. McLaren and Edgar
Geddings. This committee is to meet
at the ca_ll of the President. to study
market conditions and to work gener-
ally in the interests of and in coopera-
tion with the farmer's institutes
throughout the province. There was
some discussion as to the descrepancy
of produce prices here compared with
prices in other centres and the opinion
nlford highs; prices for potatoes es-
pecially than are being paid at pre-
sent in this province. The Commit-
tee was authorized to look fully into
this matter and. i- necessary by ron-

As a laugh producer “Nearly Mar-
ried" is probably the most successful
production seen here for some years.
There was one continuous ripple inter-
mingled with not a few good sized
roars as the story unfolded and the
intricacies of the plot became more
complete. To describe the story is
unneccessary. Enough to say it hinged
upon a series of incidents in which
a jealous wife seeks a divorce from
her husband, who by circumstances is
thrown into the company of another
woman. a “divorce specialist." Un
the verge of being divorced the hus-
band succeeds ln “making up” and ho
and his wife start out upon their se-
cond honeymoon, only to learn later
that a decree of divorce has been
granted. There is enought fun piled
into the story to make two ordinary
comedies. Miss Jolinquest as Betty
Lindsay the jealous wife and Miss
Hawkins as the Divorce' Specialist
play their parts splendidly and in fact
the same may be said of every lady
and gentleman in the cast. The spe-
cialties were also deoidedl-y funny last
night and added much to the enjoy-
ment of all. This afternoon and to-
night “The White Sister" will be the
attraction. This is said to he deci-
dedly interosting play which all
should see. . '

look good.

GOOD PRICE FOR HORSE.-Al
Game of Chance, 2,13. the champion
pacing stallion of these provinces,'
has been sold to John ll. Fa;-nhum, of,
Reading. for $3,500, by his owner. Bert|
Lint, of Fredericton. The sale was
made at Rochester last week where*
the Lint horses were racing. The'
price is the highest ever paid for a
paccr owned in the maritime provin-
ces, and is second only to the amount
for which Baring, the Halifax trotter,
owned by Boutellier and Edwards,
was disposed of four years ago. which
was $4,000. A Game of Chance was
purchased in Indiana a few years ago
for $1,050.
The third day ot the Charlottetown
Exhibition was. brought to a conclu-
sion yesterday in a blaze of glory
and hot weather which would have
done justice to the style of weather
usually prevalent in the middle of
July. ' li
The gaily dressed throngs of ladies
with their bright coats- and* sweaters
made a very picturesque scene as
they sauntered from place to place
over the grounds.
The midway as on the previous
day was a scene' of animation and
everyone seemed to be enjoying them-
solves to the utmost.
Again the attendance was very
large, there being about two hundred
more people crowded on the grand
stand' than on' Wednesday.
The main gate receipts- showed
that one hundred fewer persons pas-
sed through.
The judges had a busy day of it
and covered a large section of the
’ list. v
Great interest centre-:i in the horse
races and alll were very keenly con-
tested.
Today is the closing day of the Fair
the balance of the exhibits not judged
will be completed' and the ani“mals
and all other exhibits will gradually
be1_moved` away. The fakirs' like the
Arabs- will move their tents and will
(not quite so silently) steal away.
THE RACES.
The l~‘ree-For-All trot and pace yes-
terday proved tlira best exhibition of
speed ever witnessed in the Province.
Bob‘Mac the Island born paccr wus
picked to win but the imported pacer
La Copia. owned ty P. A. Belliveau,
Moncton was too strong and fast al-
though Boh gave him the race of his
life. The first heat was reeled oft' in
the remarkably fast time oi’ 2.13%. rc-
ducing the track record by two se-
conds made by the British Soldier on
the previous day. The second hcut
was in 2.15 and the third heat was a
real horse race. Bob Mac endeavour-
ed to take the pdle from La Copia
from the word ";;o." He forced the
stallion to the half in 1.04 (one of the
fastest halves ever paced in the Low-
er Provinces) and ihc` mile ended in
2.131/Z. Illlda S.. and Sister i‘aicli
were not fur in the rear and made ano~
