The Cadre + 6 April 1999 SPorTS 11 Panthers Get Recognized By MARC MacDONALD _ Although the end of the year brings such nega- lve things as term papers and final examinations, it also brings good things like summer and the UPEI’s annual Intercollegiate Awards Night. Held on Tuesday, March 30" at the Rodd Royalty Inn, the Awards Night provided a chance for UPEI’s athletes to get together, eat, drink and get recognized for their contri- butions to UPEI sports. All of UPEI varsity teams were present, includ- ing field hockey, women’s soccer, hockey, women’s volleyball, men’s basket- ball, women’s basketball and men’s soccer. The awards night saw the male atheletes decked out in shirts and ties and the female atheletes sporting dresses -- a far cry from the uniforms they donned for their seasons. The format for the awards night was very enjoyable. MC Joe Sullivan called up each team and a summary of the team’s year was given from the balcony. The team members of each team were then in- troduced under spot light and sepcial reconition was given to the seniors. Fi- nally each team gave out their team awards. The team awards varied from team to team but most team’s awards consisted of an “Outstanding Rookie,” “Most Improved Player” and “Most Valuable Player” awards. If there had been an award for the team who cheered, clapped and sang the most and loudest it would have gone to the women’s soccer team hands down. The girls were cheering from start to finish and instigated count- less standing ovations Much of the wom- en’s soccer team’s energy was expended supporting the AUAA Championship men’s soccer team. The men’s soccer team was presented with the AUAA Championship certificates and a long standing ova- tion from the entire audiance The big winners of the night were UPEI men’s soccer player Glen Miller and Jennifer Johnston of the women’s basketball team. Miller and Johnston each took home the UPEI Alumni Assoication Out- standing Athlete award, as well as many others. Keeping with sports news, Joe Ryan the coach of the UPEI volleyball team has stepped down as coach. Finally many people may be wondering what is the story behind the Roots posters on the walls of the Sports Center. The large osters which displayed JPEI athletes had been up for part of the season this year. The posters were taken down and were ajusted so that they are now able to stand freely. At this year’s Inter- collegiate Awards Night the posters made thier free standing debut and they will be returning to the Sports center. The posters are sponsored by Roots and are presented to recog- nize some of UPEI's out- standing atheletes. it’s time for us to meet.
