This movement has produced a great fault, so that the beds on the west side of the inlet have been rais- ed five hundred feet above those on its east side. The quiet shore of this mud- bottomed bay bear little surface evidence at present of such an amount of disturbance. The denuding forces of ages—sea waves and currents—make small work of smooth- ing off a little irregularity like that. Where deposits of shale alternate with massive sandstone beds, they often form narrow coves surrounded by lofty walls of crumbling rock. We bave seen one of those coves surrounded by lofty, brilliant red walls, crested with a bright green growth of birches and firs, when the setting sun pour- ed a flood of golden light into it, make a scene of the most extravagant brilliancy of coloring. The little inclosed bay of water, glassed with the stillness of the evening hour, reflecting every vivid tint, while its silver skirts gently lapped the gilded masses of fecus-covered reefs, added unspeakably to the beauty of the picture. The peuit wandered piping by the shadowed tide; and from the thicket overhead, the pure, sweet pliaintive nutes of the hermit thrush mingle with the sigh of the wave. Thibaudin to save the Republic from the misfortune of felling into the hands of Gen. DeGalfilet. The King of Denmark has requested the Prince of Wales to use his influence with the Prussian Government with a view to securing favorable action: by the latter upon the grievances of the Danes in Schleswig- Holstein, The Prince, however, has wisely declined such a delicate mission. The diamonds sent by the Khedive of Evypt to General Sherman when finally after many years of apxiety and annoyance they were taken from their crude Egyp- tian setting were not the gems they were supposed to be, but were worth altogether $30,000 or more. The diamonds were divided equally among the General’s four daughters- four sets of solitaire earings and four necklets. Still pone «f them have ever yet been worn, s0 great is the aversion of the family to undue display. General Sir Lintorn Simmons, G. C. B., writes in the Nineteenth Century, sounding a note of warning about the weakness of the British Army.
