PRIVATE enterprise and capital in this s0mmunity could not ke better employed ‘0 affording direct steamehip com- munication between Charlottetown and ose of the great ports of the Motherland. Great credit is due the shippers who, from time to time, have brought steamehips here and eent them away laden with the products of our Island Province. But care ehou!d be taken that noapecial gov- ernment assistance is given to any parti~ cular man or company io the carrying out of his or their respective speculations. To give publie aid, in the form of gov- ernment subsidy or otherwise, to any one, is to handicap the others, Such special aid is unfair, aod ought not to be afforded upom say consideration. SLOCK, OUR BRANCH LINES. Tur Minister of Railways is—or pre- tends to be—singularly ignorant of the business of his department. Judging by the replies he gave to questions recently propounded to him by Mr. Martin, M. P., he kuows nothing whatever about the petitions forwarded, this year, for addi- tional railway extension > in this province. It seems that the Government has simply ignored these petitions—treated them with contempt. It has at all events beeu found quite impossible to induce the Minister of Rail« ways, Or any one else, to say whether or no: it is the intention of the Government to take any action towards the survey or construct.on ot proposed of railway. That the Minister is quite ignorant of the geography ofthis province, and has not even yet found out the locality of the proposed lines, is proved by the following Parliamentary colloquy referring to the points between which the proposed lines extend :— “Mr. Macdonald, (P. E. J.) Do I understand the hon. minister to eay ‘Harmony to Murray Harbor’? If so, that muat be a mistake. the lines ““The Minister of Marine and Fisheries.
