I’ ‘— Dewey’s Execution. The execution of the unfortunate man George Dewey, for murder, took place in Charlottetown, on Pownai Square, on Tuesday last, at 2 o'clock. The criminal was brought on the platform a little after one o'clock. He bowed before the large crowd who had asssemhled to witness the dreadful scene, and spoke for about a half an hour. He confessed the deed, but declared it was the only murder be over committed. After he ceased speak- ing the rope was adjusted and the drop fell. "I‘he rope gave way and the unfor- tunate man fell to the ground. He was taken up in a state of insensibility and curled into the jail. where he was kept for some time and then was again brought on the platform carried in a chair. The rope the second lime gave wny, this time hauling out from the top of the gallows, and Dowey again fell to the ground. He was dead tllis time from the fall he re- ceived. The body was then pulled up and left hanging for some time. after which he was lowered into his coffin and taken away. When he fell the second time. a crowd rushed forward to rescue him, but were driven back by tile Volun- teers who formed a guard. Thus ended the mortal career of George Dch)’. The sight of-a'fellow mortal being thus so in- llumanly launched into eternity must have been awful to witness. in our next we will give his last address to the crowd. £500 1 3 Tu: Reuse of Assembly have granted £500 for the purpose of purchasing a site for a Market Home and erecting public buildings thereon, in this Town. This is as much as we could reasonably expect for this year, wandering the amount to be expended on the wilarf. Perhaps they will give us double tllst amount ncxt )csr, if they can stave off paying the Governor's salary. The question now is, where is the site? Public opinion seems to point to the land adjoining the Drill Shed, Is the most central. We say so too. We hope that the Government have not for- gotten the County Institutions, Saving Bank, &c.. 6m, as we want them all. Put them in remembrance, friend McMillnl‘i. __._._._____.__ A consul-ottoman» writing to the Patriot, from Souris, says the harbor there closed with ice on the 22nd January. and opened again on the 22ml March, und he believes that if a good steamer llnd been kept running across to the Gut of Cause, it might have been kt‘pt open all winter. At the time he wrote, March Bist, not a vestige of ice—not even floating ice—was to be soon In any direction seaward, and the land of Nova Scotin loomed up distinctly in the distance. The people ill Sourls all agree for a railroad, providing that dose is made the tcrllllnus. Bully for tllclll. early twenty buildings have been erected there during the past year. The Breakwater nt Knight‘s Point is nearly completed. It is 300 feet long slld 25 foot wide, and is so con- structed as to admit of carriages driving on it for freight from vessels or steamers, which can make fast alongside in twelve feet of water. ifs steamer is placed on the route above mentioned in wintcr—snd we see no reason wlly there should not be onc-—Souris will no doubt become a thriving little town, equal, perhaps superior, to our western town. ———-‘-,——_. THAT the horse is the noblest animal ill tllo world, is acknowledged by nll, but the cor brute is often treated very cruelly. We love on this Island too many backs of horses, tllat are scarccly fit for anything. It is truc there have been many very fine horses exported from this island, and no doubt man ' more are yet to be found on it, but the goo: stock is nearly run out. The most of the horses im~ ported to the Island from the Old Country love proved unsuitable for general purposes. it would have been better if some of them had noverbeen landed hero. The best horses that have ever been brought to this Island, were those fronl Canada and tile United States. These thoughts suggested themselves to our mind the other day, while looking at the cclobrstcd horse “Jacques Cartier," imported from the New Dominion inst fall. Most of our people, we know, do not like the word Dominion. but this will not offset the articles Imported from that country. The Canadian breed of horses is in every way adopted to this country. Tile climate is pretty much the same, and both are agricultural countries. This has already been proved, by the stock from the horses formerly brought from that count . it Is with pleasure, therefore, that we hill the arrival of such an nnimlll as the one above mentioned, and the gentleman who brought lllnl llcro deserves the praise of our farming population. Most of people think he will make a lie of money with him. We hope he may, but lc cannot very well do this with- out enriclllng others also. A very large price oflato has been obtained for llorscs from Am- oricnns and others who have eonle nil tllc way to the island to purchase, and tllcreforo our formers should turn their attention to this important branch of thcir business—raising good stock. It is a penny-wise but pound- foollsh pollc for a mall to raise a horse that will only hr ng him too or fifteen pounds. when, for a trifle more, he might have raised one worth forty or fifty pounds. Let all the miserable scrubs now lravcilng through the country he cried down, and a license be granted to such horses only as will bear In- spection. The Government itself would make money out of this transaction. if this was done, then we should have many such fine horses on the Island as “ Jacques Cnrtlcr" is allowed by thrse who have inspected him to be.
