A Cvriov: Arrair.—Philip Melanson, of Lakeburn, Painsec Road, who bas given evidence of derangement of mind the past week or two, bad a rather strange and very nurpleasant experience last week Last Friday afternoon he disappeared from his home and his family were un- able to get any tidings from him unt! he was brought home oD Sunday morning in @ rather precarious condition. Asnear as can be Jearned, Melanson strayedfrom home as far as Grand Digue, snd it appears entered a house during the night, and being taken for 4 burglar met with very rough treat- ment. When be was brought home on Sunday by a pediar who knew bim, his beal was eplit open and he also had an ogly gash under the jaw. Melanson who is unable to leave his bed, apparently bas no knowledge of anything that has ha;pened during his ramble, but the explanation given by the man who brcught him home is that he found him in a state of nudity and he was informed that his injaries had _ been re- ceived in the manner described. The meagre details available leaves the matter something of a mystery. The unfortu- vate man is being atuended by Dr. Bourque. —Moncton Tiwes. ——@—_— A Bic Comeany.—There was hardly standing room at the Toronto Opera House last evening at the initial performance of Charles H Yale’s ‘Forever Devil’s Auc~ tion”. The house was simply jammed and after 4.30 o’clock not « reserved seat ticket could be obtained. The show suited the audience immensely, and applause at times was deafening. Asa spectacular produc~ tion “The Devil’s Auction” beats anything that has been put oa at Toronto yet. The scenery is mostly new and magnificently painted. The colors have been used with an unpetinted hand, and the result is a series of brillant staze pictures. The costumes are fresh and resplendent with spanglesand brilliants. The play consists of three long acts, and is brim full of comedy, songs avd dances from staat to finish. Ben T Grinnell provides most of the amusement and is ably seconded by Mayme Mayo. Some very clever especial- ties wese introduced by Phyllis Allen, Colbv and De Witt, Alexander Decca and the Brothers Phantoe. The ballet corps is large and well trained. The principal dancers exercised their movements with | skill and gr-ce and were encored several times. The above company will beat the Opera House, on lth, L2ch and 13th, Oct. next. The company is the the largest ever visited Charlottetown. You come Postage on Newspapers. The Spaniards attribute this heavy death rate tothe “inhumanity of the Americans in obliging the sick Spaniards to embark and make room in the hospital for Amer- icans.” A MOTORMAN’S ESCAPE. She has been receiving attentions for several years from an elderly Grand Army of the Republic veteran. She has been very good to him too. Once when he wanted to parade with his comrades she bought him an expensive blue suit with brass buttons on it. He wanted to marry her, but the will of the selfish dead man stood between. So after a time he married somebody else. The widow was broken hearted. She recalled the suit with the brass buttons. She recalled a hundred kindnesses shown | the old soldier. She bewailed his perfi- dy to her friends. ‘‘Why,’’ said one of them, ‘‘what did you expect? He wanted a wife to make a home for him. You couldn’t marry him. So why do you complain?”’ The widow wiped her eyes. \ ‘*I know I couldn’t marry him,’’ she said. ‘‘I didn’t really want to marry him anyway, but, you see, it was such a heap of comfort to have a steady beau. ’’— Washington Post. —_——___—_.2062——_- ALL HEADACHES from whatever cause cured in half an hour by HOFFMAN'S HEADA HE POWDERS 10 cents and 25 cents ay, all druggists. ee We presume everyone would like to know where they can get the best value for their money.
