The amount consumed per day depends a’ good deal on the quality of the peat. It is like everything else, there are good and bad qualities. Some bods are more open in the fibre than others and will burn very readily hut it would require a considerable quantity of this kind to supply the wants of a family for a. wholc year. Other hogs are very close in the fib~ er and resembles coal. This I think is thc best for domestic purposes. Although a little slow on the start it will throw an excellent heat and last much longer than thc former kind. A ton of this variety would equal in quantity, about two tons of coal. About two bushels would be sufficient to run a kitchen range for s winter's day. From that amount would accumulate about half a bushcl of ashes. I can't say anything about the (ommsrcial value of thc ash as a fcttillzer. It can be used as an ab- sorbant about the stables with good results. Peat requires no tonic to make it burn, It is far cleaner than coal and can be handled with othe greatest of freedom without soiling the clothes or hands. and H0 dll!- agreeable gases discharged while l 'n . mm' K .mums DUNCAN. ._____._.--- l)EA'l`ll OF l)U»l{E'Ol~‘ FIFE IIOYALTY IN MOURNING. , l.0Nl)ON, Jan. 30-The tragic cud of thc llukc of Files, ill-starred voy- age to attend thc consecration of the Unthcdral of Khsrtum, crectcd as a memorial to General Gordon. has given a great shock to the British people. ` Although hc showed no ill effects of his experiences in the wreck of the steamship Delhi on his arrival in Egypt, thc D\ike‘s death is universal- ly attributed to thc exposure and shock resulting from the event.
