Morris, city, (amount to purchase five boxes cheese) 100.00 51.46 It has been established by army and navy officers that the daily cost of the European war-exclusive of the loss of property and lives-will run to $50,000,000 a day, or $18,250,000,000 should the conflict last for a year. The loss of men needed to carry on the great industries, commerce and t'arui- ing of Russia, France, Germany. Aus- tria, Great Brltain and other warring nations will be in proportion to that in money. When it is considered that, in thir- teen years, the cost of maintenance ot' the armies and navies of tho countries at war, as well as the cost of naval construction, has exceeded $20,000,000 000, some idea may be had of the ex- pense attached to war and the pre- parations of European countries for just such contingencies as arose in Europe. The cost of the Panama Canal, one of the most useful aids to the com- merce of the world, was approximate- ly $370,000,000. but the expense of the preparations for war in Europe dur- liig the time it took to build the canal exceeded the cost oi! this gigantic un- dertaking iiearly sixty to one. The wealth of the five nations at war is estimated at $270,000,000.000 and in thirteen years the cost of' main- tenance of armies and navies, naval construction and the like exceeded $20,000,000,000, or about 13 per cent or the total wealth or ine e..a....-ies ...- volved. The same money if spent in the construction of railroads and ex- tensions of ii merchant marine would have made any of these nations com- mercially the most powerful in the world. England’s great navy ot' 570 war- sliips, ol' which fifty-eight are battle- ships and fifty ure cruisers, with four- teen dreadnaughts now under con- struction, was built at a cost ot' many billions of dollars.' Naval construction in the last twen- ty-flve years has undergone sweeping revolutions, so that year by year the British Government was compelled tu replace its obsolete warsliips with lighting niaclilnes which embraced all the latest ideas suggested by experi- ence and approved by thc naval ex- perts. The expense of construction was en- ormous, and from 1900, when $48,840,- 000 was voted for new construction and armament, the expense iiicrcascil gradually year by year until $8o.505,- (1)20 was voted for thc flsi-al year lillfl- It ls expected that the taxes to meet the extraordiiiary expenses of the \var will be quadruplcd in Germany and France withlii the next six weeks. As business is at a standstill throughout Europe and evcry port of entry block- ed, experts are wondering whore the money is to come from. All agree that, when peace is declared atid the flgures are all in, the result financial- ly will be staggering and that thc heaviest burden lt Iias ever horn will rest upon Europe for fifty years to conie.
