Very Successful Dinner at the Hotel Davies Last Evening. The memory of good auld St. Andrew, the Patron Saint of Scotland, was this year perpetuated by the Caledonian Club in the time-honored way. The dinners given on St. Andrew’s Day under the auspices of the Club are always exceedingly enjoyable functions, and that of last evening will be fondly remembered by all who participated. The reputation of the Hotel Davies was more than sustained, and about eighty guests thoroughly discussed the choice viands provided. John S, Macdonald, Esq., President of the Caledonian Club, presided, having oa his right Honorable Senator Macdonald, Patron of the Club, and on his left James Paton, Esq., the Chief. Vice-President H. C. McMillan filled the vice-chair, supported on his right by Dr. James Macleod, Past Chief of the Sons of Scotland, and on his left by P. McCourt, Esq , President of the Benevo- lent Irish Society. soul. The toast jist follows: The Queen. The Dav and a’ wha’ honor it—Kev. D. Sutherland. Consul Kane. The Governor General and Parliament of Canada—Hon. D. Laird and Senator Macdonald. The Lieutenant-Governor and Local Legislature~Hon. D. Farquharson and A. B. Warburton, M. L. A. The Land of the Heather—Rev. G. M. Campbell. Che Land we live in—Senator Fergu- 80n. The Bench and Bar—W. S. Stewart, Q. C., and A. A. McLean, Q. C. The Agricultural and Dairying Interests —Arcbibald McNeill and T. J. Dillon, Esqs. The Military and Naval Forces of the Empire—Lieut.-Col. Moore. The Press—Hon. D. Laird, of tne Patriot, and Mr. Mclonis of Tue Examiner. Sister Societiee—P. MeCourt, Esq. President of the Benevolent Irish Society. Our Host and Hostess—-Mr. Davies. The toasts were all drank in sparkling cold water. They were interspersed with vocal and instrumental music and revi- tations, the various selections being well rendered and keenly enjoyéd. Among those who contributed to this portion of the entertainment were T. A. McLean, A. A. Bruce, William McKay, R. Lamont, Peter N. McDonald, and W. Whitehead. Mr. H. V. McKinnon played the accom- panimente. The speeches as a rule were above the average. The speech of Rev. Mr. Suth- erlaud in replying ~ to the toast of “The Day and wha’ honor it,” was really eloquent; and a similar remark applies to what was said by Rev. Mr. Campbell speaking to “the-land of the Heather.” Consul Kane was an able spokesman for the republic to the South of us, and Senator Ferguson referred with feelings of pride to this Canada of ours. Messrs Stewart and McLean made excellent speeches in reply to the “Bench and Bar;” and “ the Sister Societies ” were well look- ed after by Mr. McCourt. Hon. David Laird and Senator Macdonald replied for “the Sevate and Parliament of Canada,” the former suggesting a “deal” by which each political party would be allowed to nomin ate a senator alternately with a view to keep- ing equal the representation of the two political parties in that body after the num- ber on each side had been evened. Hon. D. Farquharson and Mr. Warburton had some good words for “the Lieuteuant-Governor and the Provincial Legislature,” and Messrs McNeil! and Dillon referred to the progress and importance of our “Agricultural and dairying industries.” Lieut.-Col. Moore respondcd briefly to our “Military and Naval Forces” because of the lateness of the hour at which the toast was reached. “The Press” was similarly disposed of for a like reason. About half-past two o’clock this morn- ing the entertainment was brought to a close, and the merry party separated all well pleased with the manner in which the memory of Scotiand’s Patron Saint had been honored by the Caledonian Club of Prince Edward Island in the yeer of grace 1896.
