greatness as he achieved was along
this line. He gave to the world noth-
ing new, or valuable, or uplifting.
Even in his unbelief he was but a
copyist of greater men that had pre-
lhis life work like theirs, was a' fail-
`ure. I n his time Bibles and churches
,multiplied and the beneiicent influ-
ences of the Christian faith continued
to expand and spread throughout the
world. Wherein then was the “great-
ness” of Ingersoll? We cannot endorse
the estimate of “Index” that he
was one of the few great men America
has produced. Americans have
achieved greatness in statesmansliip,
in philanthropy, in discovery and in-
vention, in literature and along other
lines. In none of these lines was In-
gersoll pre-eminent or even eminent.
His fame such as it is must rest upon
the oratory and the energy with
which he assailed the most sacred
beliefs of men and championed the
vulgar unbelief common to all the
ages.

We have at present no Attorney
General for this Province. The
Executive is therefore for the time
being without a legal adviser. In
some other Provinces, in Quebec and
New Brunswick, for instance, where
the ofhce of Solicitor General is main-
tained, a vacancy in the Attorney
Generalship for a few weeks or
months need not cause any dis-
turbance in governmental affairs.
And even here the services of
any Queen’s Counsel may be com-
manded at any time by the Govern-
