Thy soul-full eye, thine artleas brow, Metbought bespoke a heart That ne'er could cherish dark deceit, Nor one false tbrob impart. I knew thee when in beauty grown, Beneath the moon's pure beam, Thou ssid'st that heart was mine alone, Ab, can it be a dream? No, no, thou proud, false-hearted one, 'fhy faithless, broken vow, Shall rankle in the bosorri yet, And bend thy spirit low. I know thee now, thy once fair cheek Is traced ivitli furrows deep; Thine eye hath lost its haugltty glance, Aye, thou hast learn’d to weep For him, whose trench’rous lip, a snare. Iustill'd the poison slow; Bstray'd the pure and guileless heart- Fulse one, brok‘st thou thy vow. TIIE SLEEPING CIIILD. BY LEIGH HUNT. A brook went dancing on its way, From batik to valley leaping, And by its sunny margin lay A lovely infant sleeping. The murmur of the purling stream, Broke not the s all which bound him, Like music breatliing in his drearri A lullaby around him. It is a lovely sight to view \Vithiu this world ofsorrow, One spot which still retains the hue That earth from heaven may borrow; And such was this, a scene so fair, Arreycd in summer brightness, And one pure being feasting there- Oiie soul of radiant whiteness. VVbat happ dreams, fair child are given, To cast their sunshine o'er thee .’ \Vhnt cord unites that soul to heaven; \Vhere visions guide before thee 3 For wandering smiles ofcloudless mirth O‘er thy glad features beaming, Say, not a tlronght—a form of earth, Alloys thine hour of dreaming! Nayhap, afar on unseen wings, Thy silent spirit soaring, Now hours the burst from golden strings, Where angels are adoring; And with the pure angelic throng, Around their Maker praising, Thy joyous heart in ny join the song ' ‘en thousand tongues arising! THE Citoici: or A C.u.i.nrG.—Dr. John M. Mason, in some one of his essays, tells a story of a young nran who had been origi- nally n maker ofbruorns, and had ‘ studied divinity’ as it is termed, for two or three sessions. Having presented a specimen of his irri- provement before the Presbytery, he was found to have acquitted imself so little to their satisfaction, that they judged it necessary to remand him to his first vucation,ns more commensurate with his abilities. This decision was announced by It reverend old Minister in the following manner: ‘ Young man, it is the duty of all men to glorify God. But he calls them to glorify him in different ways, according to the gifts he bestows upon them. Some he calls to glorify him by preucbin the Gospel of his Son; and others by making besoms [broo.-ns.] ow it is the unanimous,‘ ’_ tofthis Presbytery, that he has not call- ed you to the ministry, since he has not qualified you for it; and therefore that it is your duty to go to your father. Glorify God by de- cent iridustry in making besoms.’ The anecdote has a moral. Each man to his calling. There is for every man his own peculiar sphere of action and influence, and the sooner be finds it out, the better for him. It saves the loss of time and man mistakes. There may be error in both directions in aiming too big or sinking too low. A man who would make but a poor artist might make an excellent bod-carrier. One who would make but a poor figure at the Bar, might make himself usefully familar with the exercise ofa crowbar. Many a young sentimental- ist. who has starved in n garret, might have been of some service to the world, if he had but exercised his talents at an anvil. An Irishman called on a lady and gentleman, in whose employ he was, for the purpose of getting some tea and tobacco. ‘ I had a dream last night, your honor,’ said he to the gentleman. ‘What was it, Put?’ ‘WhyI drumed that your honor made me a present of it plug of tobaoey, and her larlyslrip there-heaven bless her!—gave mo sorno tsy for the good wife.‘ ‘Ah Pet, dreams go by contraries, on know.’ ‘ Faith, and they may be that,’ sai Put, without the least hesita- tion; ‘so her ladyahip is to give the tnbaccy, and ycr honor the lay!’ _._—_.— Mr. Pitt went evening into the Duchess of Gordon's box, at the opera house. - or bavin seen him for some time, she address- ed him with her utenl blunt amilarity. “ Well, Mr. Pitt, do you talk as much nonsense us when I last saw on?” “ I don't know that," said lllr.
