Tam “DATIVS 2 TA MINER, DECEMBER S1. 1886. Christmas Chimes. The meadows are brown, the hills are all bare, And up throug h the v alley the clear, crisp ait Is singing a Christmas son Like the sone of the sea in the purple shell, lf we list to its notes it will sweet’y tell The secret it’s kept so long, It tells of a time so sunny and fair When we watched the c Jonds of the snowy air For the reindeers tiny form, And saw in our dreams such pictures of light, As we lay through the hours of the long, dark night, Away from the clouds and storm. Such nictures as glow in fairy tales When told at the hour that. Gaylight pales And the ¢ ay > n West grows gray, When we list for the ¢ ‘hime of tiny bells That are hung in the shade of haunted dclls And are rung by coblin and fay. It rings on the heart a fearful change of a darkened time, so sad, sv strange, When our dreams had lost their light. It w hispers and sings to the leafless trecs Our secret that sighs in every breeze rill the day wears into the ‘night, ©, Christmas chimes! Ye are merry and sad, Ye wound the beart ane make it glad W ith the music your ringing makes: And the weary he art that has dreamed so long ‘Takes up the thre ad of the broken song And sings till it, quivering, breaks. oer oeoe———oor High License in Ilinovs. The latest accounts about how the high licease law works in Lilinois are interesting, and ifnot decisive are at least eignificent. The license is fixed at $500. [hislaw has in Chicago increased the revenue from licenses to the city from $200,000 to $1,500,000, and has reduced the saloons from 3,900 to 3,300. In Hyde Park, a suburb of Chicago, though the population has increased, the saloons have been reduced nearly one half, while the income to the municipal- ity has been increased nearly — tenfold, What is more significant atill, the ar- rests in that suburb has been reduced from 1,895 to 678. In Springfield, the capital of the State, the saloons have been reduced 33 per cent. and the revenue from them increased 231 per cent. in some of the smaller towns bo licenses are issued, Prohibition being thus seeured by locui option. in near- ly if not quite all the rest, the nuiber of saloons have been greatly reduced, the revenues increused, andibe »mount of drunkenness and disorder notably diminished. Over the whole State the revenne from liceases bus been raised from $700,000 to over 4,500,000, and the number of saloons brought dowa from 13,000 to about 9,000. The best — ele- wents of both parties tinife tn enforcing the law, and asa matier of fact it is enforced. What is meutionod in the report from Fayette County is typica!, it is said, of others. “In several, small towns,” the report suys, “in this county, the high license has _ practical- ly resulted in prohibition, there being no one in these places willing to pay the required fee.” Such facts are worth thinking about, both by those who are Prohibitienists, aed by those who, though not so far advanced, are anxious to promote, 4s they can, the cause of sobriety with its attendant blessings. lligh licenses cortainly limit drink- ing, and they can be and aro enforced even it large cities, which are usually the difficuity and stumbling-block of Prohibitionists. —- ~~ eee -~ - - Webster and the National Debt. On one occasion Webster went to New York to sound the keynote of the National campaign for the Whigs. A dinner was given him at the Astor house, and the intention was that he should deliver his speech in response to atoast. The party sat late at the board, and the orator was very fuil. When he rose to make his speech it be- came necessary to prompt him by men- tioning a subject. After the exordium the prompter said: “The United States Bank.” Webster then spoke several minutes in favor of the ir stitution, whea the prompter said: “The Western Boundary,” and Webster changed the theme to that subject. When it was exhausted the prompter said: “The National Debt.” Webster roared “Yos, gentlemen, there isthe National Debt. Itis a sacred obligation. It must be paid; blamed if it shan’t be paid. Ill pay it myself,” and, with a Vacant stare, he ran his hand ‘in his pocket, and turningito a'zentleman said: “Flow mucli is it?” This was too much. Every one preseut knew that Webster never had a cent; that his normal state was to be without cash, aad his im- pecuoiosity was proverbial, The crowd shouted with laughter, and Webster sat down, and in five minutes was fast wsloop. The next day he delivered one of the grandest speeches in his life. —Louisville Times. -_—_> é NOTES. _ Not the promissory, but facts abont ‘VeLcomg Soap, an article that does not con- tain one particle of the adalterations used to reduce the cost of ** Pure Goods,” but dees possess the value of legitimate Washing Qualities, the demand for which proves the advantege gained by the use of the gonpine over Scaps of denbtful character.
