Market conditions in the Mother Coun- try are at present reported to be in favor of buyers. Av Englisi correspondect writes. “Rain has falien in many districis, but not plentifully, and pastures are as bare as can be. This means that the abuodant fodder crops will have to be saved up for later use, and as a consequence, a lot of growing stock isbonnd to be marketed rightaway. Judging from this point of view, prices for all descriptions of meat are not going to advance for some tiwe because there will be full supplies every where, but six oreight weeks hence, and right up toChristmas anything of goo quality will,I believe, sell very dear. ——— = CHARLOTTETOWN MARKETS Livelier Movement in Produce--An Advance in Prices. As the shipping season advances the movement of produce becomes livelier. Alrea:y several shipments have been made and more are to follow. For potatces the buyers are paying from 23c to 25c per bushe, an advance over last week’s prices, aod for oats they are giving fromm 28c to 29c, another slight ad- vance, The receipt of eggs is light, and the de~ ménd is slow at 12c. Itis said that some of the eggs shipped by the Lake Winnipeg on her last trip werein poor condition when they reached their destination. There is no change to note in the price of live hogs; but there are more coming in than fcr some time past. He eucceeded in securing a large number which were brought to Mr K Days on Friday and Saturday last and were taken to Summerside on Monday. We hear there were s0me very fine lambs among the lot. Barlow’s Mille are ruoning full blust. Some say that they are getting very fair flour out of wheat that was thought to be fi: for notbing but feed for the pigs, Mr Fidele F Arseosult bas opened up a store. We have heard that competition is the life of trade, and we certa nly bope that it will prove so here, aud that prices for produce will rise before long. Mr Jobn Cotton picked ap a strawberry blossom a few days go. This 18 said to be a sign of a light winter. We shall soon aee. TUN IN THE FOOTNOTE. A Popuiar Librettist Couldn’t Withhold a Joke on Prospective Pride. W. S. Gilbert does not retain all of his bumor for use in his librettos. In the early days of his success, when Gilbert and Sullivan were considered by managers as the ‘‘sure winners’ tu the comic opera field, a young woman who was a member of one of the ** Pina fore’’ companies wrote to Gilbert teil- ing him of her approaching marriage with a young man of good position and family. Gilbert congratulated the young wo- man and expressed the hope that Ler fu- ture might be prosperous and happy. Only a little more than 4 mouth pass- ed, anu avother letter from the same girl reached him, in which she stated that her engagement with the young man had been broken and that she had accepted another suitor. He replied that he had every confi- dence in her judgment and again ex- pressed his hearty wishes for her wel- fare. It was almost two months after that that Gilbert received a third letter from THE DAILY EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN, OCTOBER 28 1898.
