THE Way | TO SIT. Dur Guanniinsitininea # Straight Backed Style is the Best Oue, When our grandmothers were girls and straight-backed chairs instead of cushioned divans were the usual resting places, the young women held tiem: selves with w straightness that was al- most stiffness. Then when they grew old they still held themselves like duch- esses. For it is the way one sits rather than the exercises one takes that deter- mines the erectness of the figure. A prominent physician says that the proper sitting position requires that the spine shall be kept straight and that the support needed for the upper part shall be feltinthe right place. There. fore, it is necessary to sit as far back in the chair as possille, so that the lower end of the spine shall be traced azainst the back of the sear. If tiis back is straight the shoulders wiil also rest against it; but even if the shoulders have no point of support, it will be found that they do not need it when the base of the spineis supported properly. This position makes no strain upon tlie ligaments of the spine, Every organ of the Lody is properly fixed by this at- titude. Tne feet should rest squarely upon the floor ; the hands should rest lightly in the lap, and thus perfect equilibrium and rest is secured. The arms should never be crossed, for that position causes astraip upon the spine, places a weight upon the stomach aud~ diaphragm and thus increases the labor of digestion and respiration. Once ina while it isa good thing to place the arms behind the back, giving as it does, the fullest expansion to the upper part of the body.—New York World. A Theorist Who Failed. There recently died in New Jersey at the age of 73 a theorist who had spent all his fortune, which atone time was considerable, and all his life in a vain attempt to solve the problem of extract- ing the silver which les insolution in the sea from the salt water which holds it. He lived down on the coast in a cottage which he built years ago, and on every side were constructed sluic ‘es, runaways, washes and the various appliances with which he was experimenting. The in- terior of the cottage resembled the apartments of a medieval alchemist rather than that of a nineteenth century house by the sea. It was fitted with retoris, phials, crucibles and in the same corner was a dintinutive furnace, Some ten years ago he was joined in his labors by a young woman about 18. Shie attended him up to the day of his burial, but since that time no trace of her can be found. The cottage is dilapidated and no heirs have claimed it, nor has any paper been found to indicate the name or origin of its strange occ upants. A Tribute to Gladstone's Eleaquence, For one good speech Mr. Cnamberlain or Mr. Balfour may make, Mr. Glad- stone makes 20. He is yersed in every artifice of oratory; he is practised in every mood and method of debate. Hae has the temperament and the equipment Hayward words, ‘“‘a shade more imagination.” Yet, before admitting Mr. Hayward’s qualification, I would prefix the acd jec- tive ‘‘poetic” to the noun “imagination, for Mr. Gladstone’s imagination is most active. As aman of business he is in- spired. Let his theme be a great trade or industry; let the subject of his yolu- minons discourse be railway rates, bi- metallism, the opium traffic ; let him unfold his mind and unroll his memor y before his audience—do but hearken te his illustrations and follow his discus- zioas, and when, to your sorrow, he sits down, you will obserse with amazement the fingers of the clock.—Scribner's Magazine, To Dispel Colds, Headaches and fevers, to cleaase the system effectually, yet gently, when custive or bilious, or w hen the blood is impure or sluggish, to permanently cure habitual constipation, to awaken the kidneys and liver to a healthy activity, without irritat- ing or weakening them, Figs, .—— of ladies in ill health have been or are being restored to health and trength by the use of Hawker’s Tonic. t has become the great and popular amily remedy. use Syrup of } quesiion whecher | apd twenty-four | earth. that dreadful Sunday night wore ou tne one ki whether are ludab tacis upon Venus or bot, but wede know taai Venus has an at- mosphere, wdina in its atmosphere Watery vapor exists atl clouds floai, and that Qoo3 tee surtses of the planet the force of gravit tion 1s not very dif- ferent frou tiat wooca at mcuifests on the suriaes of the earut. It is easy to see that the same inethod may Le applied to find oui how vast Venus revolves on its axis. No thunder from the skies was ever accompanied with a roar of such velie- mence as that which issued from the throat of the great volcano in Krakatoa, an islet lying in the Straits of Sunda, be- tween Sumatra and Java, at 10 o’clock on Monday morning, Aug. 27, 1883. As noise increased iu intensity and fre- quency. The explosions succeeded eac.: other so rapidiy that a continuous roa seemed to issue from the island. The critical moment was now approaching, and the outbreak was preparing for a majestic culmination, The people of Batavia did not sleep that night. Their windows gquivered with the thunders from Krakatoa, which resounded like the discharge of artille ry in their streets. Finally at 10 o’clock on Monday morning a stupendous convul- sion took place which far transcend o of the shocks which had preceded This supreme effort it was whicl cuit the mightiest noise ever heard on the globe. Batavia is ninety-five miles distant from Krakatoa. At Carimon, Java, 355 miles away, reports were heard on that Sunday morning which led to the belief that there must be some vessel in the distance which was dis- charging its guns as signals of disiress. The authorities sent out boats to make a search; they presently returned, as no thing could be found in want of succor, The reports were sounds which came all the way from Krakatoa. At Mecas sar, in Celebes, loud explosions attracted the notice of eveeybody. Two steamers were hastily sent out to find out what was the matter, The sounds had travel ed from the Straits of Sunda, a distance of 969 miles. But mere hundreds of miles will not suffice to illustrate the ex- traordinary distance to which the great est noise thatever was heard was able to penetrate, The figures have to be ex- pressed in thousands, This seems al- most incredible, but it is certainly true. In the Victoria plains, in West Australia, the shepherds were "startled by noises like heavy cannonading. It was some time afterward before they learned that tranquillity ad been disturbed by the grand events at Krakatoa, 1700 miles away.—Youth’s Companion, A Man Cannot Have Himself Cremated Can a man determine for himself the mode of the disposal of lis remains after death, or is such disposal entirely in the hands of his executors? Mr. Aubrey Richardson has written a little volume entitled ‘The Law of Cremation,” which takes the view that in the eye of English law there can be no property in a corpse. This in fact has been authoritatively de- cided, and in accordance with this prin- ciple the direction of a testator to his executors to hand over his body aite: death toa person named in his will, in order that it might be disposed of accord- ing to his directions, has been held to be void.
