OTTAWA, April 5--Mr. Gillis, member for Richmond County, will on Tuesday inquire of the Ministry: “Does the de- spatch in the Halifax Chronicle, Decem- ber, 1894, represent correctly the utteranve of Hon. W. S. Fielding, then Provincial Secretary and Premier of Nova Scotia and now Minister of Finanec, who, in company with Hon. L. H. Davies, now Miuister of Mariue, at a public meeting, at Sydney, on the 10th December, 1894, is reported in said despatch as haying stated as follows: * Referring to the coal trade he said the Liberal party would not preach one doc+ trme in Cape Breton and another in the rest of the Dominion. If the coal business could not be carried on without protection: it is better not to carry itonatall. Mr. Fielding’s speech at Sidney, will his views as therein expreesed be carried into effect as regards the coal industry in the Tariff bill thatis to be submitted tous durivg the present ses- sion; if not, in what respect will the industry be treated differing from the views he then expressed ?” ty RUSSIAN OPINION, a The Obstluacy of Greece Semi-Officially Deplored, Sr. Perersavre, April 5—The semi- official Journal de St. Petersburg says that the aggressive, provocative attitude that Greece continues to maintain with such de- plorable obstinacy forces the powers, much against their wish, to have recourse to the blockade of the Gulf of Athens. The same paper denounces the retention of Col. Vassos in Crete, and says it refuses to believe it possible that Greece will in- duig?e in such an extraordinary act of folly as a declaration of war would be. Con- tinuing, the Journal] says: “Inthe event of such a thing happening, Greece would undoubtedly be the aggressor. She would also be answerable for and would certainly have to endure the most serious conse- quences, and she would count on nobody’s support.” A MURDERERS DESIGN. ‘They Will:Never Land Richard Newman in Sydney Alive’’ San Francisco, April 5.—Buitler, alias Newman, Australian murderer, was conveyed to the steamer which sailed last night for Australia. Queensland has still an area of 430,000, - 000 acres to a population of about 440, - 000 people. Its government hes lately been offering more tempting conditions to settlers, who may pow hold ordinary land fer 20 years at a rental of threcmepre per acre, while ‘‘scruly land’’ may bé se- lected in areas up to 10,900 acres and held for 80 years at a average rental per acre of very much leys than a penny. This ‘ought to be good news for many struggting fora bare living in the moth- er country. Ancient Wills. The antiquity of legal methods is curiGusly illustrated by the recent dis- covery of the oldest will extant. This uniqne document was unearthed by Professor Petrie at Kahum, Egypt, and is at least 4,000 years old. In its phra- seology the will is singularly modern in form, and it is said that it might be ad- mitted to probate today. The Amateur Performance, She—Wasn't she natural in the sleep- ing scene? INTERESTING NEWS NOTES S€LECT- ED FOR THE EXAMINER. I) is stated in ministerial circles at Ma- crid that the proposed reforms in Cuba will be introduced into the adm aistration of thfe affairs of that island in the month of April. President Kruger’s grandson, an officer of the Goverumeot at Krugersdrop, has been suspended from duty for having used insulting language to Queen Victoria, and au enquiry has been ordered in jis case. In consequence of the request of the admirals in Creian waters, it has been decided that a farther battalion of six hun- dred men be forthwith sent to Crete by each power. The Welsh Fusiliers, at Malta, have been ordered to be ready to sail mumediately. Crown Prince Constantine issued the following order to the Greek army on the frontier :—“It has pleased His Majesty Kiog George to entrust me with the high command of the army in Thessally. In taking up my duties at a critical hour, when great responsibilities are resting upon our Fatberlana, { feel convinced that you will all do your duty. Remain faithful to your oaths, and be patient and firm in order to evercome all difficulties. By obedience to the Jaws and your commander you will show that you possess the diseip - line which makes the strength and tne greatness of armies.” ARE ALL BIGAMISTS. luteresting Decision Kendered by a Wash- a Judge, Judge Keane, of the Superior Court of the State of Washington, has decided that over fifty persons who have tecured di- vorces in that State during the past 33 years, are bigamists. During that time many residents of Eastern States went there for the purpose of securing divorces, and after having obtained the de-ired decree they have returaed to their native State and remarried. I[n ai cases, the court holds, where these seconi marriages took piace within six mouths after the decree of divorce was obtained, the party -otarryirg is guilty ot bigamy. ‘This dedikion is based upon an interpretation of theslaw whicn holds that for a period of “ix months after a divorce is pranted in that State the divorced parties cannot legally marry again. —— How to Make Scallop Saiad. “A dish of cold scallops, surroznded with tomato jelly, and the whole cover- ed with a well made mayonnaise, is a very delicious and attractive one. The jelly is very simply made. It is merely the juice of a can of tomatoes mixed with boxes of gelatin and made intoa firm jelly. The scallops are the most difficult to get right, as it is next to im- possible to get the average cook to real- ize that they require hardly any cooking, one minute being an ample allowance; otherwise they toughen, and a tough, greasy scallop is of all things the most indigestible as well as the most unap- petizing. If properly cocked, scallops are delicious, either hot or cold, with a niayonnaise. To fry scallops for a salad put a tea- spoonful of salt and half as much pepper in half a pint of fine sifted flour, roll the scullops in it and fry in deep boiling lard for a minute only. Put in the re- frigerator, and, when quite cold, dish with the jelly and mayomnaise. How to Make Dollandaise Sauce.
