Testlfykrig before the Radio Committee of the Common; he charged that. the "great bulk" of private radio station operators in Canada were "milking the sta- tions for all they are worth and living on recordings and trans- crlptions." 0B0 stations, however, helped a‘ great deal to provide employ- ment through sustaining pro- grams. However. many artists develop- ed 1n Canada left and went else- where because Canadians were not 1mm“ ’ to paying high prices for good talent. Mr. Murdoch was one cf two witnesses to appear before the committee. W. A. Cato/n of the radio division of the Transport Department took the stand after Mir. Murdoch was through to an- swer questions on a brief prepar- ed by G.C.W. Browne, controller of radio in the Transport Depart- ment. Mr. Murdoch said that 1h trans- criptions made for radio stations members of the Federation were paid $1,334,467 and the royalitles amounted to $38,803. ‘The Federation, said M-r. Mur- doch, was ready to give up mak- ing radio transcription because it believed that such a move would lead to more employment for musicians. A station» could operate 17 hours a day on transcriptions. If transcriptions were prohibit- ed on the air listeners might not hear high paid talent but would hear local talent in which they were interested. Rev. E. G. I-Ianseil (SC-Mac- Leod) said the CBC received from the taxpayers about $5,000,000 a year which private stations did not get and possibly for that rea- son the CBC was able to spend more for the development of tal- ent. Mr. Murdoch said that what- ever the circumstances private stations’ with few exceptions, were not developing local talent or giving employment to profes- sional musicians. The property of Messrs. G.
