ture larvae or the so-called "bolt"
These are found in the stomach dur-
ing the Spring, and are of a yellowish-
brown color._ They are somewhat pear-
shaped, tapering towards their head,
and formed of a series of rings or
segments. Subsequently, during the
'Summer months, they voluntarily»loos~
en their hold from the wall of the
stomach. and fall off into the# con-
tents of the stomach, and finally are
expelled with the faeces or manurc.
The time occupied by them in the sto-
mach averages about nine months. Af-
ter being expelled with the faeces,tiiey
remain in the manure or bury them-
selves in the soft earth or
ground, where they gradually develop
during the summer into the pupal state
and finally emerge us the perfect
adult gad or bot ily.
- Symptoms
The symptoms cnuscd by the
presence of bots in the stomach are
indenitc. 'i‘licir press,-iicc, however,may
be suspected during the Winter months
and Spring in liori-ies which are un-
tlirifty und subject to attacks of in-
digestlon and colic without other ap'
parent cause. Horses affected with
bots, causing irritation oi' the stom-
ncli are sometimes noticed to mani-
fest their presence by ai tendency

which they display of turning up the
upper lip, as if iiuusented. ln some
cases the bots may be noticed in the
dung which is passed.
Treatment and Prevention
Measures should be taken to prevert
horses from becoming affected by pro-
tecting them against the attacks of
the ilies. Horses which ure being ex-
posed to the attacks of the flies may
be protected by clipping oil’ the long
hairs from the region of the head,
lircast, shoulders and legs. The paris
mentioned should also be smeared fre-
quently with oili. By clipping the long

RAISING FARM COLTB
The high prices of horses line led
many farmers to raising colts as a
side-line. And there is no other thing
that ilts into average farm conditions
as well. During the Winter and early
Spring 'little farm work is performed
and the horses might as well raise a
few colts.
On the most farms it is best to have
the mares foal in the Spring so that
by the time the Spring work starts the
horses are ready for the harness. Colts
should he weaned at six 'months in
some cases. A great number of colts
stop growing after being weaned. This
is due to thc owner in almost every
case. The colt should be eating grain
before weaning and good pnsturc pru-
vided. in this way no setbacks' will
occur in the colt's growth.
Mnny farmers make the mistake of
keeping their colts in the barn too
much. A good warm stall is a ilne
thing on stormy days and at night,but
let them out during the day; even if it
is a little cold.
For the last few years there has
been a steady increase in tho price of
good horses. There never will be a
time when horses will pay better than
at the present. The farmer who has
money in the bank or who is looking
for a good paying investment should
consider raising colts. Suppose you
have a. team of mares wirth five hun-
dred dollars. lf you had that amount
in the bank you would not get over ten
dollars interest, but if you raise two
colts you would get over ai hundred
dollars. Is there any other thing tha:
will pay as well? If there is I and a
lot of other farmers would be pleases
to know what it is.
Of course there is an element of risk
to it as well as to any other business,
but where common-sense methods are
used raising colts is no harder than
raising n. crop of wheat; and there is

CRATE8 VERSUS BAFIRELS
Thousands of cars were loaded with
barrels during the last fruit harvest,
packed in crates instead of baskets.
The crates lit close on a rack and
economize in the matter of room. This
rack is shown with 40-bushel crates.
The crates are hauled to a car on a
siding. Bins in the car hold different
varieties of apples. Then the car is
shipped to some distant point where
fruit of this kind is not as pleiitifui as
iii Michigan. Some of the cars go to
North and South Dakota; buyers buy
at the cor door, so do peddlars and
wagons.
In most instances apples handled in
this way are picked, but a good many
carloads of wiiidfalls are shipped in
the some way. They also carry long
distances, and are sold at prices that
eiinble thc wholesale buyer to pay
more for tlieni than they would bring
for cider.
Apples were shipped out of Michi-
gan during this method. it is claimed
that it results in a saving to the con-~
sumer over fruit packed in barrels,
and tlio liaiid-picked fruit shipped in
bulk is as good as that that has been

which attacks cabboges, cauliflower,
turnip and similar plants, just about
ruined these crops in some neiglibin'~
hoods. Fortunately, this is one of the
pests that comes in destructive num-
bers only once in a number of years.

dinary gardener, inay spray his fields
with whsle-oil or ilsh-oil soap solu-
tions, the latter being probably the

and similar crops only on a home gar-
den or small market garden scale the
easiest way to get out oi the trouble
is probably by spraying with tobscco~
extract, such as "black-leaf tobacco
ext:-actex_trsct."__;l‘his is reduced one
to sixty or sixt -five. with about d
pound of hard soap (dissolved in wat-
fr) added to every fifty or sixty gal~
ons.
This addition is necessary to make
the solution spread over the leaves.
Otherwise it would roll off the leaves
